I actually muse over microphone emulation. It kind of reminds me of those VW beetles that you can get those plastic/fiberglass body parts for to make it look like a Shelby Cobra or Rolls-Royce. They all fall quite short of those original products but are certainly good for amusement purposes.

You generally can't fake a silk purse from a sows ear. But you can make a fine pork chop. I had actually heard that many of the microphone emulator/simulators required a Shure SM57/58? I hadn't heard about the AT requirement? I can't tell you from experience a microphone emulation but is any good? I don't use any emulators. I use the real deals because I saved all of my pennies to get them.

The emulators can try to approximate the character of the microphone you're trying to emulate and again it's probably fine as a tool for sound modification purposes but generally only one thing sounds like a U87 and that's a U87. I mean you can have sex change surgery but can you make a baby after that? Probably not but you can sure as hell try as often as possible? Will you have a climax in the end? WRONG END! Ouch!

I have the hardware version that was a gift for being a Beta tester and providing some of the microphones that were used. It is not what you might expect it be or do, but it is cool and can be useful. It lies there somewhere between being an Eq and an effect. It doesn't get daily use, but like a lot of gear, it can the exact thing needed from time to time. I have no plans to sell mine.

That plug-in is terrible. Do not ever use it ever again, under any circumstance. Useless. Horrible. Terrible. Bad. Crap. Hype. Don't kid yourself.
