I finally took the advice last year and got the Focusrite 2i2, to go with my SM-57 microphone.
Works great. Listen to the pros, guys...

Here's a recording I did for my brother:

He was drunk and there's some background noises, as well as microphone noises from movement, but you can get the idea of how it would sound with a good vocal track.
