Ditto. I didn't even listen to it.

I find myself avoiding songs posted here that don't ask for opinions on the mix, or specific points.

I've been seeing more and more of these kinds of posts, and not only here, but in some of the other forums I frequent as well, and the general consensus shares my opinion.

So many of these are put up as a kind of "see how many pushups I can do", or as PC said, to increase hits.

And, I'm immediately put off when a track is based on samples and loops of other existing songs.

To the OP... why don't you do something of your own instead of relying on other people's work? Anyone can do a mash-up. Anyone can put 4 songs together. How about recording something of your own?

IMHO of course.

Well, the title put me off and then the song list solidified it. I look forward to the day when DJ's get back to radio and speech art, helping musicians rather than pretending they are one.

On the other hand, I do think its cool we've added another creative way to use music to say something, deliver a message. But, because we use music to deliver a message doesn't make you a musician. It all sounds like trace art art/ clip art/ copy past/ paint by numbers... Lego's.
It pretty lame in the department of music and always will be to me.
The modern DJ's needs to quit pretending they are musicians.

Ableton Live , thanks for all your contributions. You've made something anyone can use as long as they have a source to rip from.

Bass wobble is the new Van Halen.

Sorry, I didn't listen either. I hope your efforts serve you well.

Hi Donny, Melodyne is an essential . It can align things in pro audio that you cannot imagine. It can find notes or percussive objects in bad mixes and allow you tune, repair or replace.

I use it to improve phase in swirly tracks while preserving background or lead lines too. Note to midi , very cool. Its astonishing software.

Yes, but you are using it as a forensic tool. There's a big difference. I was more referring to its use on "singers" like Paris Hilton, or any of the other image-driven "artists", where it is used as a substitute fix-all for no-talent hacks who have no business being in front of a mic to begin with.... ever.

RemyRAD Thu, 04/24/2014 - 12:51

They took the video down that he had posted. His Sound Cloud stuff is still there. I took a listen.

What we simply have here is, probably someone with something of a language barrier as there is some indication about Budapest? And this is for dance clubs. I don't find any harm in this? This guy is poor and he worked with whatever was available. I think it's admirable sounding. Definitely made me want to dance. And was a good use of whatever software he likes using.

So what I did hear of his, sounded pretty slick. Not anybody can do that. Most obviously understand his software well. Makes full use of it. Cool! I thought it cool. Though I must admit, I didn't listen to them long as I had no idea how long they really were? So for dance tracks, it's superb. And maybe he is a handicap only kid? That goes by OnlyDave.

Not that this couldn't be some kind of BS nonsense? I've seen this guy around a bit. Guess he's just trying to make a name for himself? Maybe trying to garner work? Maybe just amusing himself because he can't do anything else?

I thought you guys rather brutal. I felt hurt even though it wasn't directed towards me.

Remy,

you are all over the map. You talk to me and other members with slap in the face manner and out of left field dive in for the underdog like this, who is clearly not a musician, engineer of substance and who is being questioned for copy-write infringement.

You talked down to me, use my name in threads with condescending remarks then praise garbage the next day.

you are all over the map.

Ya, lets be so compassionate that we let everyone in on our craft ruin the industry. Let them all in so no one can afford to pay real musicians. Lets make room for laptop studios and plug-ins, put all the boutique pro audio manufacturers out of business so you can feel good about your life and shit studio full of broken toys cable and dreams.

Can we continue to make beautiful music like this and support the manufacturers that help us get there? you know the sound right? the sound of Neve and API. the stuff that costs money?
Am I going to make enough money to buy the hardware for a band like this to perform, recording mix and master it? Are are your serious, really?

If we don't tell the truth and make room for the deserving here, who am I? Who are you? What do you stand for, Remy?
Are you working, Remy? Or are you posing as someone in the business that is living in the past and now wanting to see it all go to hell?

One minute you are raving about a Neve and API and the next minute you are protecting the hand that steals it all away.
I don't know man, you sound like you have compassion but a few screws loose. You are a crazy maker in my books.

RemyRAD Fri, 04/25/2014 - 00:20

I'm terribly sorry Chris, you misinterpreted. I don't talk down to you. You have an incredible system. You do very high quality work. I'd love to get one of those digital reverbs you have, if I could afford it. I can't. Not yet.

No I'm not a poser. But like anyone else in this business, I have my own specialties. Which goes beyond recording studios. I come from a broadcasting background and therein lies the difference. I'm not putting down or trying to screw up the boutique manufacturers. It's classy stuff. Horrendously overpriced but for those that want the best. Price is generally no object.

Of course I've got a few screws loose. I'm certified with actual considerable brain damage, from a health condition that nearly killed me. So if I seem to be a little out there? Yeah... it's a long road back from brain surgery.

While I love fine consoles. And who doesn't? I feel very fortunate, to have what I have. But when contracted to work in someone else's basement studio? Sometimes the equipment is crappy. I don't have any control over that. But I still have to make a good recording, regardless of the equipment. Sure, the differences between good stuff and crappy stuff are quite profound. But what is rock 'n roll but musically rich distortion. Like with anything, there's a point of diminishing return.

It's obvious, you invest a lot of money, to find new and awesome equipment. Not all are as fortunate as you. Many of your readers, all have low-end, cheap equipment. What are they to glean when you tell them, what they have, won't allow them to make a professional recording? And that they should buy something better. That doesn't work for a lot of people. And I offer the alternative, education, experiences, situations.

If we don't tell the truth? Whose truth? What truth? Please be more specific? Make room for the deserving? Deserving what? All I want to do is make beautiful recordings of truly good music. And 90% comes from my talent. The rest is the equipment. I can use anything if it passes audio. Will it be of the caliber of equipment that you prefer? Likely not? But I'm a real engineer. And that's what we do.

Poser... LOL. Yeah... the Recording Academy, contacted me last year. They wanted me to join. Asked if I wanted to vote. Then they proceeded to tell me that they believe, I might be the only engineer, in the world, to have garnered 2 Grammy, 1 Emmy & 1 Soul Train Music Awards nominations, on my first submission entries. Which really blew me away! I asked them " you mean, my hero engineers didn't accomplish that?" Apparently not. So yeah... I'm a poser. I pose to you that while you believe the equipment is the most important formula for making fine recordings? I'd have to disagree. It's the person, the talent, the experience, the technique. It ain't the equipment.

For instance, I happen to know that while George Massenburg makes really wonderful equipment that he prefers using. He's also made some fine recordings on old Neve's. Which are about 180° backwards from his equipment that he designed. But he made beautiful recordings on one of those crappy Neve consoles that wasn't his GML/ITI stuff. How do you justify that? Yes both sets of equipment are top shelf. But it's the engineer! The recording is only as good as the engineer. I happen to believe that knowledge, education, practice, practice, practice, is the be-all end-all. Not the equipment. That stuff goes obsolete every other day. So ya always have a fresh batch from which to choose from. They say people want choices. Ya got choices. I don't need that many choices. I made my choices more than 30 years ago. And I stand by my choices.

Do I really care if equipment manufacturers go out of business? No. Because they all have. API, Neve, MCI, ITI/GML and a bevy of others that likely few people even knew about? Olive, Flickinger, Harrison et al.. And I wasn't responsible for them going out of business. Let's be clear about that. We are living in times of overabundance. It wasn't this way, so terribly many years ago. And McDonald's is a bigger moneymaker then Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. We know which one is the better quality meat. But ya don't see dozens of teenagers there are at lunchtime.

So I preach how to make good recordings with any equipment, on hand. I'm not here to criticize anything about what you have, purchase or do. I have a great deal of respect for you. And I accept the fact that you have very little respect for me. Which frankly I think rude of you? You shouldn't be putting me down like that. I do not put you down. I might cite certain examples of things that you might have and use. But I don't put it down. You have the best stuff made on the planet. And those boutique companies, because they are cottage businesses, will come and go as they always have.

So again my apologies if you have misunderstood me. You're a class act. And I don't put any other engineers down. Because this is art. And art is art. Some engineers I like better than others but, I don't believe in insulting other engineers. There's no reason to do so. It's art. Of course some beginners make truly awful recordings. But that's to be expected of a beginner. We're all here to help those schmoes. I'm not comparing my work to yours. I'm not comparing my work really to anyone's. I love other engineers work. I'm always amazed and frequently impressed. Rarely am I unimpressed. And I'm not saying that I can engineer like Massenburg, Clearmountain, Swedein, Emmerich, any others. No. I can't. That's not me.

And let's face it, I'm more of a live performance capture person, for recordings and broadcasts, than I am a studio snob. So I have to deal with completely un-ideal conditions, frequently. Maybe you should try working under some of those conditions and see how you do? Bad acoustics. Bad setups. Bad electricity. Stupid PA guys. Wrong levels coming from active splitters. The whole 9 yards. Yet... it still has to sound great. And that's what I do. You roll with it. And I never, never, use equipment as an excuse for a less than professional recording.

Really Chris, we've gone through this before. And I do have the utmost respect for you. Maybe I think you go to some extremes, perhaps? But I guess that's the mark of a gear lizard? An audiophile. Passionate hobbyist. And because you're on the leading edge, which can be quite exciting. It's a fun playing with all this stuff. We've all enjoyed playing with our stuff. But I don't play with my stuff. I make money with my stuff. I use my stuff. They are my tools of my trade.

Am I working now? Hell no. I burnt out doing television news for over 17 years. And that's about the only work here in the Washington, DC area, news and politics. No thank you, I've had enough. So after all of these years, 30+ in the Baltimore/Washington DC metro area, I am for pairing to relocate to Austin, Texas. Where there are already a few people waiting to work with me. I thought it was going to do Nashville? Since I went there for the MIX audio convention, May, 2012. And I was highly received by folks like the AES chapter head. And plenty others.

I'm not sure if you're talking to me this way because, perchance, you're jealous of me? I'm jealous of you. Well not jealous but envious of much of the equipment that you highly covet. You get and try out great stuff. No doubt. But it's not for everybody. Just like a Rolls-Royce. Not for everybody. Most people make do with Toyotas and Chevrolets. Mackie's and Behringer's. Not impressive but they work. And people still make fine recordings but perhaps not up to your standards? But that's okay. Not everyone here is into the high-end, boutique, esoteric. Though plenty are.

So tell me why, large frame consoles and analog multi-track recorders, are coming back? You know why. Because nothing digital, short of DSD, sounds like that stuff. Warm, full bodied, colorful, aggressive. And PCM? It's awful. And you know that. Everyone knows that. That's what you're hybrid. Because digital by itself, is crap sounding. It's not about how much high-end. It's about the beauty. Let's just be clear about that. Every time a new piece of equipment comes out with more high-end, everybody thinks it's better. It's not better. It's only different. If different is good? Then it's good. If different is bad? Then it's bad.

In fact I apologize for being so talented. It must be incredibly intimidating to you? But you're no less than I am. And I'm not more than you. I'm me. And you, are you. You do damn fine work. I do damn fine work. You and I and many of our other constituents here, are all fabulous engineers. All with a world of experience, different from mine. Different from yours. We're all different. And we're all united. None of us want to hear crap audio. Of course less than stellar musicianship, rarely results, in quality recordings. More important that the musicians and their talents be better than the equipment. Great if the equipment is of the highest caliber. Whatever it might be? And you have to understand, not everybody can be you. Not everybody can be like me or like Donny or anyone else here that's a professional.

So can we just please, be friends? I promise I'll try to be good daddy. I really will.

you are missing the point Remy, this isn't about me, yet you keep using my name in very bazare posts. I don't care about convincing you about anything I do, nor do I care about pleasing anyone either. And if you ever took the time to see the forum that I post in, they are never in the home recording forums!

My threads are usually in the HYBRID FORUM! The place where hardware and pro audio lives. Not cheap plug-ins and freeware.

I have no interest in large numbers of readers here. The OP has no business postin g that here. We are recording engineers, yet you are all over him like he deserves recognition and we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Then, in another post, you will treat someone like they are idiots. I don't think you are aware of how you come across.

Start reading the forum categories. You clearly should be spending your time in the newbies section.

pcrecord Fri, 04/25/2014 - 03:47

audiokid and RemyRad posts are always a fine read to me. You have different approach that are, to me, equally valid, even if I don't always agree 100%.
What I like about audiokid is his constant technic and technological approach. Which is a total search of the perfect signal path. We recordist usually don't play an instrument on every album. People come to the studio or send us tracks and we need to make it sound good any way possible. In that case, you can't control how good is a song but you can control how pure or how appropriatly colored a track is by using the right gear and the right settings.

What I like about RemyRad is her constant search for musicality. Her belief that if the best song is played in any studio, it will be a great recording.
She reminds us to stop buying gear instead of learning the craft. That the new gizmo won't be the solution for everything. Also she have a nack for voicing a different point of view on subjects that all poster agreed on and I like that.

Please make peace !! ;)

About this thread : In the end, a forum must setup bounderies to what may be posted. I think that posting a video just to have a better visibility is not what anyone wants in a forum called 'Discussion in '[="http://recording.or…"]Song & Mix Collaboration[/]="http://recording.or…"]Song & Mix Collaboration[/]'
If you post a song and say clic here I need more hits : there's no discussion and do collaboration.

There could be a new forum called a 'We will click to help the world know you'. I'd be willing to go there and click on all video, listen for a second and exit. So people would have one more hit on their video and hope they get enough to be known to the world. Why not listening to the whole video? Because I'm here for recording info. Taking any pre-recorded music and mix them isn't what recording is about !

audiokid Fri, 04/25/2014 - 11:31

I like where this is going, thanks for the review, its always good to read what people think about you.

Whats interesting about your comments PC, I'm actually a professional musician and not an engineer per-say. I toured for 18 years out of a suitcase and Blue Bird Bus, guitar in hand. You get wise about this business after that many years on the road.

Performance and musicality is everything to me. Remy and I have a something uniquely in common. Both our mothers were Metropolitan Opera Stars. There is a kinship here. Our family's have been in the classics for over a century.

But where we are different, I am a musician and value hearing dynamics and transients and want pro audio and live music to continue. To feed the hand that feeds my world. To pay it forward to those who are working on preserving this industry and who are passionateness about recording..
Not like this emulated crap posted above that was removed for infringement. Thats what Remy raves about today.. tomorrow will be different and the next day... but lets get something said here.

My experience with Remy, from a professional level is quite the opposite to me. Cheap mics, the over use of compression and Vintage [="http://www.rupertne…"]Neve[/]="http://www.rupertne…"]Neve[/]'s mixed in with freeware is what I get from her. Which is all contradicting and confused. I'm okay with opinions ( good for you!), but,. what I'm not okay with is the idiotic derailing and rambling about self over and over in pro audio topics that you clearly have NO CLUE ABOUT! but posing or in dilution, go on and spew utter crap to the newbies while hoping they are on the right track. .

She derails more topics than I care to count. No one with any level of Pro would appreciate this nonsense.

YES, its a free world but we need to have some rules and netiquette. Get off my lawn as Kurt says. Choose the appropriate forum categories to push low end or electronic music Remy. Our Forums are titled for a reason.

Barging in on a discussions with Pros (in a pro environment) who are clearly in the pro audio forums ( not home recording) and derailing topic over and over to promote the newbies one day, while dropping Neve, Neve and API ... isn't my idea of smart or cool or, beneficial to this industry what so ever! You are all over the map. I sense resentment more than I care to mention.
Get real here Remy. We are all doing our thing but choose your forums and direction.
There is nothing pro about your approach to music to me in the least. Its all goofy.

I hope this helps because I do care about you.

Am I alone on this? Say it now because this really isn't about me at all. I'm the messenger on this one.

anonymous Fri, 04/25/2014 - 11:55

"...You and I and many of our other constituents here..."

Constituent? I am now one of your constituents? I think not. Being someone's "constituent" implies that they represent me in some way. You do not.
Perhaps you meant "peers"?
Or, maybe not. One can never really tell with you.

And yet, more poorly chosen words on your part. You will have to pardon me. While you were winning all your awards, I was but a lowly English major. It's a double edged sword, you see. A curse and a blessing.
The curse there is that I pick up on the misuse of words.
The blessing is that I know the definitions of words before I use them, and I make far less a fool of myself than those who do not.

"I'm not sure if you're talking to me this way because, perchance, you're jealous of me?"

Oh Yes. You have hit the nail right on the head. Of this there is no doubt. Chris is absolutely purple with envy. I'm sure he lays awake, night after night, tossing and turning, just wishing he could be more like you.
I know he is, because he told me so. Why, just the other day, we were talking audio - and how it pertains to curried frog's ass - and right out of the blue, he said to me, "You know what Donny? I'm jealous of Remy. I sure wish I could be more like her."

:ROFLMAO:
