after software compression? I've been compressing but not using the compressor make up gain to add db's---i've been using the fader..does that make a sonic difference?

Likely not, unless you can come up with one that claims level-dependent color' as part of it's feature set?
Mostly it would be a mater of convenience as to where, or even if.. You could look leaving the comp' gain at zero as being one less math step for the signal to go through... also not likely much of a big deal either way. :)

it depends on the plug you use: Blockfish (for example) has a limiter on the output, so turning up the plug's gain might squash the dynamics more.. other plugs may have "soft clipping".. but if there is no extra or hidden processing after the plug's make-up gain it should make no difference.
