Ive been asking here about patchbays earlier and wanna thank everyone thats been helpful to come up with
solutions and advice. Now as i live and learn ive replaced the whole idea and moved my studio into my bedroom for a cleaner and more compact setup. Also ive lost my job so i have to sell some of my equipment including the zed r16 etc. Ive replaced it with a smaller euphonix mc mix.
Now i know some of you are using the RME interfaces. I have the RME UFX which will be my main interface.
And i have a pair of warm audio WA76 with a stereo link that i want to use with the UFX for both tracking and mixing. Anyone else doing this? Im just curious how others are using their outboard gear(stereo compressor in this case) along with their audio interface and how they should be connected ?

Why not using it for mixing? ; The common thinking is that Round trip (going back to the same unit) enter risks of loosing quality both by going to the digital domain and back to an already cpu busy computer. In the end, you need to decide what you want to do and if it sounds good to you and the style of music you do. The UFX is said to have great converters so it's worth a try. Of course, I don't know how the WA76 sounds. IF it's a flavor you can't live without... ;)
Yes, sure. Totally agree. I havent got too much experience with these units yet, so im not sure how they should be connected.
I have no external preamps and its ok. I think the preamps on the UFX will do for know, im mostly dealing with synths and line level stuff anyways. I have different synths etc that i would like to use with the WA76 just to add some warmth and a little bit compression when tracking. But if going source - wa76 - UFX i will have to keep unplugging everytime i want to change source and also im not being able to
use the WA76 for mixing unless unplugging stuff. So i was wondering if its ok to connect the WA76 to the i/o of the UFX and do the routing
in Totalmix ? I havent dealt with this stuff too much so im just thinking out loud here in hope for someone to chime in with experience :)

You could use a patchbay to plug all the sources, the WA76 in/outs and all the UFX in/outs

if you want to avoid a P/B, think about a "channel strip" solution. i have a Millennia STT-1 that has 2 different preamps, choice of transformer (XFORMER) in or out, e.q., opto comp, and dee esser functions. i suppose someone could plug something like that in permanently and record at the push of a button.
i can't imagine using a stereo pair of compressors while recording for any reason ....... that's something i would leave for mix. for that a good plug in sim would be the most effective way to get from A to B ...
