I'm new to recording and need to buy some hardware and software. With basic research, I think I've narrowed my choices to the Firebox or the Mbox, but I don't think I know enough to make an informed choice. Any advice would be appreciated!

My computer: Dell laptop, Pentium M 1.86, 512 RAM (upgradable to 2 GB, which I have no problem doing), hard drive at 5400 RPM (am considering getting a faster external hard drive), 1 firewire, 4 USB, 533 FSB.

What I plan to do: Guitar, vocals, and acoustic instruments as audio tracks. Drums, keys, bass, and maybe samples as MIDI tracks. I won't be recording bands - rather, I will be composing songs myself one track at a time.

Also would appreciate any opinions on whether Cubase LE (bundled with the Firebox) or Pro Tools LE (bundled with Mbox) would be better for my situation. Thanks!

The best I can do is pose some questions that may help you decide. Do you have any friends who record? Do they use either Cubase or PT? If so maybe you want to have the same platform so you can share projects. Do you think you'll ever seek employment in this field? If so, I would begrudgingly suggest learning Pro Tools as it's common currency in the industry.

If you get the firebox, you won't have another FW out for the external audio drive which you absolutely should get. If you have a cardbus slot you can get a FW card which are cheap. If not, you'll be stuck using USB for your external drive which is fine for less intensive work.

Finally, just say the names out loud. How does "Cubase" make you feel? What does "Pro Tools" say about you?

Good luck. 8-)

Hello,

not exacly true the Presonus Firebox just started shipping 2 months ago and can work without a PSU.

The preamps are better than MBOX and overal sound quality is better than MBOX.

In addition, the Firebox is Firewire and the MBOX is USB.

My vote is for the Presonus Firebox!
