OK...similar threads have been posted all over this and other forums, but let's get down to the brass tacks here.

If you were to build a system from scratch, and money was *not* an object (to a point obviousy), what would you build, and what components would you use (brand names, etc.)?

I will be running Cubase/32 w/ Tascam 428 as the core of the system. Eventually a Echo Layla or two, and probably a 3rd-party DSP board (Creamware or Universal Audio).

Some small restrictions:

1) Single processor
2) PC-Based (not Mac)
3) I want to keep my 2 brand new WD ATA/100 HDs
4) W2K

Thanks. I just want a system that I know will work out of the box...I don't have time for days of troubleshooting to *eventually* get it to work! I'd rather spend a little more and get it up and running sooner (for example Intel vs AMD...Intel chipset vs Via...etc.).

Thanks!

DH

ooh...the dreaming begins!! lol
Asus TUSL2-C Mainboard with a PIII 1Ghz
512MB PC133 SDRAM
Appian Dual Monitor AGP
10 or 20GB ATA100 drive for OS and apps...
40GB ATA100 for misc file storage..
SCSI card and drives for Data flow to program.
Of course CDROM and CDRW...
also I like to have a Sound Blaster for misc applications and so forth..
I'm waiting on a better motherboard for Dual PIII's that actually has an intel chipset...
Intel chipsets work better with certain audio hardware..Via are buggy..AMD are proving to be good tho..but I havent tested one yet since I trust Intel due to experience...

Thanks for the advice...while searching Pricewatch for some of the devices you listed, I came across a mobo for dual PIIIs using Intel chipset...you probably already know about it, but just in case:

ASUS P3C-D Dual P3 w/ the new Intel i820 chipset

I saw it for $189 at Micro-Xpress

http://www.microx-press.com

Which is a local Indy-based company that I like to use 'cause its close by (not always the cheapest, but I can walk right in and get the parts I need...)

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Stay away from the 820 chipsets!!! Bad chipset...bad!!! Plus that's only a Slot 1 and not a Socket 370!!! 820 chipsets have serious math co-processor issues
Quote from Asus site:
"Because of Intel's 820 MTH Issue, P3C2000 will be phased out accordingly. This problem does not occur on the P3C-E/-L/-S/-LS/-D motherboards if you are using "RAMBUS RDRAM" instead of "SDRAM on a DIMM Riser Card". Please refer to ASUS Statements on Intel's MTH Issue."
Basically you will have to spend more money on RDRAM to get better results..SDRAM is still the choice..very very cheap..and besides..why go with an older processor when you can get faster results with the newer Socket 370 processors!!
I had a dealing with the 820 when it first came out...not good on the sanity measurement tool if you ask me!! I reinstalled a machine several times trying to figure out why the hell it kept freezing up and so forth..till Intel released the recall of all the 820 chipsets did I realize that it was that!!! Just trying to save you some serious frustration..
If you want a Dual Socket 370 board with an intel chip look at Abit VP6 I believe it is..only supports up to 933Mhz I think it is..

OK...I have laid out all the components I need based on your recommendations.

One last question on video cards:

Do you recognize and/or recommend any of the following video cards:

1) 3D Power - 32MB GEFORCE2 2 MX TV 4X/PRO W/B - (No other technical details listed)($49)

2) ASUS - 32MB V7100 PRO PURE 4X/PRO - GeForce2 MX-400 Chipset - RAMDAC Speed = 350 MHz ($84)

3) ATI - 32MB RADEON 7000 DDR 4X/PRO - (No other technical details listed) ($73)

4) Hercules - 32MB 3D PROPHET 4000 4X/PRO - Kyro - 4000XT chipset - RAMDAC Speed = 270 MHz ($81)

I don't want to make the same mistake I made last time w/ video. My local soda shop doesn't carry the Appian you listed, and dual monitors are out of the question right now anyway ($$$).

Other components I will be getting:

ASUS TUSL2-C mobo ($117)
Intel PIII 1GHz/133 ($209)
Teac Floppy ($14)
Antec Case w/300w ($61)
Kingston 256/133 SDRAM ($34) - I already have 2 other 128 sticks to add to it for a total of 512MB
Cooling Fan ($9)
Sony CRX160E CD-R ($97) - I already have one of these on another box - works great!
2 WD 40GB ATA/100 Drives ($59/ea after rebate)

I'm going to pass on the SCSI for now, but will probably add a SCSI HD in the near future just to get llornkcor off my back!!! :) lol!

Now, just waiting on the video!

When I search Pricewatch, I can find cheaper prices, but with MicroX-press, I can just go down and pick them up, and if there are problems, I can just go down and exchange. It's worth the little extra I pay. Tax vs. shipping is about a wash, so not really an issue.

Thanks again.

(This sucker *better* work, or I'm going back to Cakewalk!!! ) Hehe...

I would go with the ATI card..dont get any card with TV input unless you absolutely need it. 32MB is fine but dont get any higher RAM based video cards.
If you are getting the Asus board remember that it can take both PC133 and PC100..which you seem to be mismatching since you allready have some older sticks of memory. You'll be better off going with all PC133 instead of mismatching..when you mismatch you are thus going at the speed of the slowest RAM..PC100. RAM is soooo cheap..get your self another stick..believe me..this box will work. I just built pretty much the same system for a buddy of mine and it's so damn stable!!! Good Luck

scsi, scsi, scsi, scsi!!
(it's the industry standard)

:D

Hey if you need more monitor realestate, you can install the JS Pager virtual desktop.
http://hem.fyristorg.com/jspage/home.html
Cheaper than 2 monitors. You can't look at 2 desktops at once, tho. But they are only a Ctrl + -> away.

I use it, when I'm not using litestep.

Besides, it's not the equipment that counts, its how you use it.
