Can someone help me? I noticed Mike Tholen has often praised the Quantec reverb. I assume he is talking about the Yardstick room simulator that is on their website. But does anyone know about the Quantec QRS Reverb? Apparently it is 2 in/4out and looks like a 2 rack space unit. Anyone know how it differs sonically from the Yardstick? Is it also a highly desirable piece to acquire? What would be a good price for one? Do they still make them new or are they only available used?

the only difference in the two is the i/o config.
all dig. and it no longer has four outs.
which were early reflections out 1/2 and decay out of 3/4. very nice for surround/5.1 stuff.
you can use a blend of the four by dipping some switches inside.
I haven't found a box-verb that touches this thing.
The Yardstick is the same thing.
I think I paid around 2,500.00 USD for this box, mint condition. and it kills those other more expensive "do-it-all" boxes.

I'm probably not going to be able to buy it this time around, so if anyone else is interested, there is a QRS for auction on E-bay right now. The opening bid is $1500, but that is less than the reserve which is who knows how much.
Unfortunately, I'm tapped out from my latest spending orgy of mics, pres, subwoofer, clock, and DI. And I keep promising myself: acoustics NEXT!

In case you're interested in them further on down the line, the Quantec web site has some interesting and useful articles/info on reverb. The Yardstick runs at 48kHz max as they rationalise that the natural effect of reverb reduces the frequency range of any signal. As you may know from my own queries re reverb (and our friend Mike put me on to the Quantec stuff) the status re quality of plug in verbs is an issue for me, definately worth checking these outboard units out though...although they were quite definate in not producing any algorithms for Pro Tools they are producing reverbs for the Creamware Pulsar/Scope system (?!!)...interesting to see what they do now the new Pro Tools is out, which may I say, seems seriously sexy!
BTW how are the meditations going re accoustics and not gear?

Well, Sted, it's like this. I've bought and paid for the plans for the acoustic makeover from my local acoustician (Mike Blackmer). Problem is, I'm so in debt from my last round of gear orgy (plus my most recent Miami Beach vacation where my car got stolen!), I can't afford to shut the studio down for a couple of weeks to do the install! I dont know the old QRS's to be popular as second hand items.....
But in their time they were highly regarded and intended for post work as well as music.
The new one looks v cool I bet it sounds GREAT!
