I am currently trying to decide if I should switch to XP from 98se. Anybody out there running it yet? Cheers, Doc.

Ummm...wrong forum for this thread!! You should move this to the digital Cafe man!
I'm running XP and have to say....WOW!! After I tweaked it and streamlined my system I have to say this is the most responsive OS I've worked on..it's stable, reliable and hasn't crashed on me yet(well, of course it has but I'm talking about while recording!) It's crashed only because I installed the new Waves 3.5 plug ins and it reaked havoc!! Went back to the 3.2 and all is well...
Seriously...to me XP is rock solid and I reccomend going there from any any OS.
One rule tho...do a clean install...do not upgrade...upgrading doesn nothing but cause problems...
What do you need to know that will convince you?

Amazing..I have had nothing but good luck with XP..running it at work and home..at work I run Norton AnitVirus corporate server where my machine protects and updates everyone in the building..never a problem...configuring it is really easy for networking too...it's all self contained!
Audio machine at home is running smooth as a baby's arse!
I'm wondering if most of the issues are due to most companies not upgrading their software or hardware for XP yet? That would be my guess...Otherwise I give XP my seal of approval..

OK, am I the only one that notices everytime a new version of windows comes out everyone jumps all over it? I also notice that all the people busting on it don't use it...

I bet you heard this same conversation when you upgraded to 98se. I guarantee the only operating system worse than win me is 98se!
Could you imagine going back to 95? Or even win98? I can tell you it would suck! And that is how I think of going back to anything but xp. I run xp pro and love it. Not only is it MUCH more stable than previous os's, it runs faster, makes doing things easier, connectivity is much improved, and it looks better and is more fun too!

Don't heitate! Come out of the cave! Where do you want to go today? ;)

Honestly, XP gets a lot more praise from the general consumer. Windows 2000 pro was aimed at the business or professional PC user. People in the IT field who used Windows NT(the building block for 2000 and XP) have known for years that it is considerably more stable than Win95/98/ME. Opus, you can chime in at any time....lol
My moto is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. At some point, I might upgrade, but my production PC is off limits. I could take that $150 and use it for mic cables or something.

ya know...when XP first came out I was hesitent..just like Win2k...to jump onboard and begin the long troubleshooting or debugging period...With Win2k it was a lot different since it was a completely different outlook on the OS overall...even XP is somewhat different but it's a lot easier nowadays....I jumped on to XP only because I had to do the tweak guide for it...other than that I wouldn't have gone that route at all...well, once I finished the tweak guide and was doing my final round tests I couldn't believe it...it was actually usable!!!
In fact if there is another OS to come out I will do the same thing...wait until I get the motivation to do a tweak guide for it and see if it suits me or not!
It's a wonderful game we play with all these friggen OS choices!
Yes, any IT tech will definately tell you Win2k is far superior to 98 in many ways but some will tell you stay with 98SE as it is very stable...just outdated!

I'm no 'IT' tech, but most of those guys don't even know what a VAX is. As a real software tech, for over 15 years, I can tell you no Microsoft OS is stable... I can also tell you that more than 80% of the machines I get in for repair are running XP or ME. I can also tell you that half of those people give up on it and revert back to what they were using before!

Anywho, I'm no God, but do deal with 50-60 machines daily...

On my own machines... *nix or nothing!

i've been on xp pro for a while now and i think it is the best microsoft os yet. it all boils down to the user, how much does the user know about the os? i went thru all the os's from MS ever since 95 and so far i had the best results with 2000 and xp pro. if you ask me, i say make the switch but like opus said, don't do the upgrade. i tried it and got very bad results with xp and 2000 vs doing a clean install. not that it didn't work or anything, but for some reason i got better stability and performance. follow opus's xp setup, make sure your system is an anus or close to it, then check http://www.blackviper.com for xp services super tweaks and you'll get good results.

I must say I was VERY happy with win98se until I installed Audiophile and found that Sonar doesn't like it's drivers at all. Thus I was forced to move to win2k. Tell you what: I had more blue sccreens in one month than I had in a year with win98se. By now, I've dealt with all the problems, but it was not an easy ride. As for stablility, now I can say that I reached approximately the same level as with win98. Switching to XP will mean another troubleshooting period which I'd rather spend making music. On the other hand, I understand that at some point in time upgrade will become inevitable again.

Hey Doc!

The question you have to ask yourself is what do you expect to gain from the new OS that you don't have now. I see very little benefit going to XP that I don't have with Win2000, and it is absolutely "Rock Solid". Now on my home system where my kids play games, etc., XP might make sense. But my system is 100% dedicated to audio (I don't even surf the internet), and W2K provides me with the OS requirements that I need...stability...NT kernal for SX...

XP looks cooler, and has some other features that I might use away from audio....

Just my 2p....

Cheers!

I have just made the switch to XP for 98SE...

I must say I am very impressed with XP so far...
All of my plug ins seem to be working....
Nuendo is more or less the same....
US 428 is basically the same....

I was able to open projects done on 98 SE with no problem....

The reason I made the change is because I went to dual processor system and 98se doesn't support the second processor........

I also set the computer in MLP Processor mode instead of ACPI mode....
