Sun Studio's Famous "Slap Back" Echo
Very cool history on Sam Phillips / Elvis' sound and slap back echo. I've always wondered what Ampex 350 was about.

vintage studio gear search
Guys...
I'm searching for a piece of gear that I used a million years ago (okay, maybe not quite a million, but close...1977 or so LOL)... This was a mic preamp, compressor, EQ, all rolled into one. I can't for the life of me remember the manufacturer and I've scoured google and ebay for it, to no avail.

Recording levels
I record live orchestral concerts using a Tascam DR-100 and Tandy/Realistic PZMs. I have to use these mics for various reasons including the layout of the venue and the need to carry both musical instrument and recording gear. Mics have 1/4 inch jacks and are connected to the DR-100 using XLR adapters. Recording settings WAV, 16 bit, 44.1 sampling frequency.

Most valuabe gear to have to achieve 60s garage tone?
For the last couple years i have been on a never ending quest to achieve that famous fuzz tone of the 60s garage bands such as the sonics, early stones, the kinks, the chesterfield kings. I guess the best representation of the sound would be a new band called the urges.
stereo effects processor good for modulation
i want a stereo effects processor to use for multi-effects (not including reverb which i want to use a Lexicon pcm91.) the three brands i assume are best are TC Electronic (g-force?), eventide (eclipse), and Yamaha (spx-90).
any recommendations would be appreciated.
Ideas on a Good Mic and Preamp?
Ok, I have been looking for a short while for a good mic and preamp combo. The main purpose of these is to record studio vocals, acoustic guitar, and maybe piano as well. Mainly Vocals. Im looking possilbly for tube gear that will give me the warmth, character, and coloration of vintage gear. I have a 2-$3,000 budget to work with, and Im not in a rush to find anything.

Vintech X73,X73i,X81
I know the main diff on these is the EQ section. Do you guys think the X73 and specifically the X81 warrant the extra dough? Or could I get by with the X73i? Would I feel like Im missing something with the X73i and wish I had gotten the X81?
Would I use all the extra Q points and such to warrant the extra cost?
thanks fro your thoughts

Ampex 350 vs. . 351
Does anyone know how to tell the difference between an Ampex 350 vs a 351? A friend of mine has a couple of these Ampex pres, and from pictures i've found it obviously one or the other, but there is nothing on either of them to distinguish which model it is. Any help is greatly appreciated.
