avalon u5

After a very helpful previous post I now have more questions regarding recording Jazz guitar. I play fingerstyle and pick style jazz guitar on a custom built 7 string archtop through a Polytone Minibrute IV. I have been experimenting with recording some solo jazz pieces for quite some time.

I'se used and listened to Avalon U5 and since i'm getting my own studio together to record some stuff for a album (recording what i can at home to save studio time and $$) i was thinking about getting one for lectric guitar clean and bass...

I would like to try one of these things to di my electric guitar.

Can you please anticipate what would I have to expect ?

I mean: which is ( if there is) the dominant colour character of the U5 ?

Is the tone control a variable thing or is it a sort of "preset" eq curve selection ?

I've heard that it's really good for bass, but how does it sound on other stuff like electric and electric/acoustic guitars?

I like the Avalon U5 for bass and guitar DI. I really like the smaller size of the Summit Audio TD-100, but I haven't tried one yet. I've heard the TD-100 has similar good qualities to the U5, but is slightly warmer.

I am seriously considering picking up the U5 for obvious duties on bass guitar. I know it works on other instruments and keyboards, too.



For Mic'ed signals, does anyone run something like a Mackie preamp (off the insert) through the U5 to help add some color "on the way in" to the A/D?

I'm thinking of investing in a DI and a few of my friends have recommended the Avalon and the Manley. I'm not sure how each one fairs up so yes, would very much appreciate it if I could get some opinion?

Hi all...can I use my Avalon U5 DI's with dynamic mics? I figure that they can work that way theoretically, but wondered if it's worthwhile to try it?
