Anyone got experience mixing/fixing bad vocals?

Hearing these modern punkbands live, it's like hey they can't sing. Okey some might... but it isn't very common. And when you're listening to a record, it's like day and night... Do they fix all this in the studio, or do they push the record button to the final take is on tape?

mixing a bad arrangement.

I am just starting a full time carrer as a recording engineer, in my own studio, and for others in the area as well. Currently my market has been low level bands. A lot of the stuff is poorly arranged, chord voicings, one part stepping on another, etc.
I sometimes spend more time than I should to tweak stuff, just cuz I don't want crap with my name on it.

How to make your mix not sound bad on the radio...

i'm curious as to what i can do to make my recordings not sound like crap when they go through the radio's compressors and limiters and whatnot. i want to keep my mixes dynamic, but what can i do to the whole thing to make it not sound like crap when it runs through those compressors? should i fight compression with compression? and if so how?
