1/4" interconnect cables...high end vs low end (price)

I was just looking at picking up some new 1/4" cables to connect stuff in my home studio. Basically, need them to connect preamps to compressors, compressors to the soundcard inputs, nothing fancy. Probably looking at buying about 10 or so for now, probably about 3' to 6' in length. My question is this...

Confused about cables and diffs. between Hi Z/Lo Z

I've just begun to record outside of the virtual realm and now that I've started to work with outboard gear such as pre's, mics and guitars I'm unsure of which cables to use for which applications. Please, indulge me:

-Are all TRS 1/4 cables suitable for balanced inputs/outputs? What are the differences between balanced & unbalanced?
