How loud or soft do you guys have your monitors at when you mix? And why?

Hello all, this is my first post on here, glad to see there's such a great community to turn to for tricks, tips and help. Anyways, I have a question about headphone mixes for vocals that I'd like some help with.

hi, i'm new to this site. I am an artist trying to get to the final stage of the project. Everything was recorded in some f the best studios in nashville. I spent several days with a very experienced mixer there and now my masterer is saying the mixes are unacceptable for mastering due to the 'levels being slammed'.

My new Dell laptop comes with Vista and does not have a "stereo Mix" function, my external Creative Soundblaster MP3+ soundcard also does not have this option, how can I get this stereo mix funtion please,? I would prefer a software option but if not, then hardware, help?

Hey anyone got any tips for me to get my bass to stand out in the mix? I'm using pretty decent equipment really, thats not the problem (Ampeg B100r, Hofner HCT5001, Sennheiser e602II). But I just can't seem to get it to stand out. I've tried rolling off the bass and turning up the gain, and vis versa. I've dabbled with compressing it, but to no avail. Any tips?

I have Windows Vista and I tried recording from the stereo mix on Audacity and fruity loops. I tried looking around different websites and none of them have seem to have found a solution to my problem. I right clicked the volume icon and selected recording devices then I right clicked and selected "Show disconnected and disabled devices" still nothing shows up except the microphone. :(
