Mackie Onyx 1620 W/Firewire & Cubase

Hey everyone,
I just picked up this wonderful board with the firewire card and I'm using it with cubase. Its working really good, most of the time. Im having a few very light pops every now and then on the playback, I'm not too sure if it is occurring during recording. I've adjust my latency a few times and its gotten better, but it could be better still.

Mackie Onyx 400f low levels

Ok, I just picked this guy up from L&M on the weekend and I haven't had much time to play around with it yet (2 hours) but I've noticed something that kind of bugs me. I plugged in an SM57 to record acoustic guitar with, just as a quick little test. I also plugged in a direct line from my guitars active pickup. Both lines were into pre-amp channels 1 and 2 on the 400f respectively.

Digi 002R, RME Fireface, Apogee Ensemble, Mackie 1200F

Hey everyone...this is a mutiple part question...

Right now I run an FW1884 with CubaseSX2 on an iMac G5. CubaseSX is what I've been using for a few years, but it seems unstable on both Mac and PC. I'm also not totally satisfied with the FW1884, and it could be my error, but it just doesn't sound very good no matter what room treatment, mic set up, pres, or instruments I use.

Trading in my Mackie

I've had it with my Mackie console. The preamps are just horrible, and that's putting it mildly. Even my M-Audio DMP3 has better sounding preamps. I've been thinking about getting an Allen & Heath but I'd like to get some of your opinions before shelling out. I have a Mackie 24/8 and I'd like something similar for that. I like the portability. Anyway, what do you think?

Mackie onyx

there was a study done by some recording engineers a while back to see what mic preamp was the best all around pre (i cant find the link to save my life). they tested api's, avalons and quite a few others. during mid experiment one of the engineers brought a Mackie onyx board just for sh*ts and giggles. they tried it and were amazed.
