running a null test

General consensus, null tests are reported to be an accurate way to compare results. How do you make sure something really does null or not then? I've read most metering applications have issues to provide sufficient results for null tests. Example: the on board metering in many DAW's ignores all levels below a certain point. I found out that the only REALLY good metering/measurement is WaveLab and a few others. It displays all the way down to -144 dB. If this is true, the results of some null tests may not be true.
