overhead mics

Description

Overhead microphones are used in sound recording and live sound reproduction to pick up ambient sounds, transients and the overall blend of instruments. They are used in drum recordings to achieve a stereo image of a full drum kit. They are used to create a balanced stereo recording of an orchestra or live productions.

Also search equidistant and the 3:1 rule (A point is said to be equidistant from a set of objects if the distances between that point and each object in the set are equal) can effect the phase between two microphones.

So for years now, at least since DAWs have given us the ability to move audio files around by infinitesimal amounts within a time line, I've both read and talked to other engineers about time aligning the overhead drum mics to the Snare and Kick...
I know there's also software available that can apparently time align those mics/tracks, although I've never used it.

My daughter asked me to help out with her outdoor wedding. Among other things she needs me to do, I need to mic the minister and the happy couple. I don't have lavalieres and don't want to mess with cordless rigs. I'll be running the mics through a Mackie vlz pro 16, using the mixer pres.

So; I have around $300-400 that I can spend on purchasing some drum overheads for my home studio. I'd like to replace the cheap MXL 603's that I've been using with, I guess, "less" cheap ones. I've been reading some interesting things on different sites about the Avantone CK-1's and the Kel KM-1's.

Hello!

I am reading, listening to other people records and trying to choose the best setup for my band for recording drums.

I have PreSonus firestudio project and SM57 mic. I was considering Shure Beta 52 for bass drum and for overheads I can buy used pair of sm81. SM57 would go for snare.

Hi,

I am from Hong Kong. I will record drums for a hip hop /rock/funky band next week. I have to decide which mic to buy very soon. I used to record drum with 10mics and I hope to stick with it (kick x2, snare x2, toms x3, OH x2, plus a room mic). Below are the mics that I hope to decide with the tight budget I have got:
