Greetings everybody.

I'd like to start this thread out with a question. How many Pro Tools users have messed around with sessions and using a player with a Pro Tools rig in another state, town, or even studio, to do his over dubs. I think it would be cool to get a pool of pro available players together with Pro Tools rigs that are available to do overdub sessions in their own studio for hire. I bet there are a lot of talented musician/engineers out there that would be willing to get in on this. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Or has this already been done and organized if so where could I find more info. I am familiar with DigiPronet, but I was wondering if there are other solutions available as well. I think the DigiProNet is a very powerful solution. Its just catching on slowly from what I gather.

Any comments or ideas welcome. I'm a sax player and I would like to get started with something like this. Any others?

Thanks

Darren

Nomad,

Awesome! We'll have to get a site together or work with RO on something like that. I think it would be great. We could hook up a searchable database, along with rates, and MP3 demos of work to audition the players out. What instrument(s) do you play, and what do you have in your rig?

Thanks

I like where this idea is going. IMO, RO would be an ideal place to set something like this up. It should just be a matter of adding a field or 2 to the extant directory. Then a couple pages to help people with FTP, and offer easy to use temporary space on this server at a reasonable rate for the FTP challenged.

audiokid, you getting all this?

Chris,

First off. Thank you very much for your effort and ideas for RO!! Very Cool!

FTP would get kinda expensive to host especially with PT going to 96k. Even if we just snail mailed CD-roms back and forth until online storage became more do able. The big thing we need to do is get a database started with Musicians, and Studios. The studio owners don't really have to be players, but need to have access to the players. If you had a database with the players, and list of studios envolved and willing then this could be a very do able thing. Anymore alot of the players are getting home studios capable for doing basic tracking. All you need is a PT rig, 1 good mic, 1 good pre-amp, and a set of headphones (a few gobos would help too). Everything else is a bonus. If we could get a network set up that can foster this kind of a thing it will grow like wild fire!

Musicians that can do studio work could then do sessions in their own house, and still make money. This provides a service for producers that need an instrument and they are tired of the regonal sound, or maybe just can't find the right style player. I know because I needed a harmonica player that could really blow! and I couldn't find one in my area, and it was too cost prohibitive to drive to Nashville book studio time, do the session and drive back. I'm a sax player, and a former facility owner, I could play on one of these remote sessions on my on time with my gear for a fraction of the cost as I would charge in my studio. I believe there are many, many others out there that would do the same thing.

Just think if you could line up a whole day or two of these type of session that you could fit in when it was slow, or when you had a short block of time in between clients.

Any other thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

What do you all think?

Keep up the thread!

Being a freelance engineer, I don't have my own rig at the moment. For that matter, nor do I have any desire to get one - given the tumultuous changes constantly taking place in the DAW market (a la PTHD, etc). Letting other people spend their money works well for me at the moment. :D

If you'd like some examples of my work, I could rip a few snipits off cd's for you. Understand that it's all copyrighted stuff and further distribution would not permitted.

Angel,

You make me laugh out LOUD! Man I know what you mean about chops and dusting them off. I remember the days of locking myself in the "woodshed" to practice my butt off for hours and hours, first to get good, then to maintain. Then I got a full time gig, forget about maintaining, it is time to make a living! I keep telling my self I need to get a regular pratice schedual started up again, but .... never do. Its hard to make myself practice "meaningless scales" when I could be in the studio writing a song, or working on a cool new lick for a tune.

Anyway.... thanks for the input. You are right everybody doesn't have to have a rig, just access to one. I personally love to have one just so I can work with it at anytime for as long as I want.

What do you think about getting together some sort of community colaboration just to get things rolling with this thing. It could be an instrumental, Somebody could start out with a cool chord progression with a click, then pass it on to the drums guy, then to the next etc.

What do you think? Anybody else have any Ideas?

mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-i-i-i-i!!

(as in the hit single do re mi fa so la etc.)

Cool Angel! I just sold a PT|HD rig to a friend of mine that is a drummer! I know he would be up for it. The only thing is he is building a studio in his new home and it is going to be a while before it is done. I'm not sure if he has the space where he is at the moment. I'll ask any way. He stops by this forum from time to time.

Beatboy!!! you out there!?!

If there is anybody else out there too that plays drums. The more the better.

Excellent!

What can we do to get this thing rolling? I think it would be cool to get 3 tunes floating around. This way it wouldn't grow stale waiting for someone to do there part. If we have 3 tunes going than it won't feel as slow, for the ones waiting to do their part, and it won't feel like such a rush for the one doing his part.

We need a click track with a rythm part for a chord progression. Or if anybody has another way to get it going we could do that too.

What do you all say?

Hi all, I just stumbled on this thread, sounds good to me. I am the main engineer in a Mix+ room in San Diego but have been a drummer by trade for 20 + years.
The owner of the studio is a drummer as well. between us we've got 6 kits and 25+ snares, any and all perc you could imagine, Vdrums, Simmons sds V (retriggering) drumkat, MPC, K2600, Reason, API,Avalon, Focusrite, Good mics etc,.
I've been lurking around the Digistudio posts trying to decide wheather or not to jump in. This sounds like it could be a cool alternative. Even with a fairly deep talent pool in San Diego and OC, I've come up short on players for certain styles and have also just wanted "something different". I'd love to jump in with some drums/perc/programming or whatever we could help with and start making some more friends out of state! Also have a sweetheart of a yamaha c7 piano.....

Ang1970,

You are going to make us think! with this off meter thing aren't you?! Cool, I'm up for anything to get this going.

Craig! Sounds awesome, this is what we need more and more of a talent pool to keep this as a viable option.

I guess what I could do to get one of these started is come up with a tune with a chord progression, and a drum machine track for a click track (midi and recorded of course), then send CD-roms out to the next guys. I would guess live drums would be next. It would be great if the drums and bass could be cut at the same time, but I doesn't have to be.

It also would be great if someone else could get a rough track started with a click, and a well defined road map.

Keep it comming, It doesn't have to be too complicated on the first one so we can learn from it to get a system started.

Craig,

Digistudio is for Pro-Tools 5.2, I have PT|HD 5.3 which doesn't support it yet. I think the next upgrade is suposed to, but as of yet I can't do that. Sounds great for the drums and bass. I'll try to get something done this next week, Lord willing.

I was thinking of some kinda funky groove thing, you know that kinda swings a little. I'll let you know when I get this first stage done.

Thanks

Craig,

Yeah I know what you mean. You would think they would have it on 5.3 since it was on 5.2. I guess Digi was really strapped to get the HD thing happening by Winter Namm. I think with in the year the software updates will catch up with the hardware. Its kinda funny to say that, I'm so used to the software being limited to the hardware. A year from now all the smoke will be cleared and I think the remote Digistudio thing will be comming more to the forefront.

Digi just hired another guy this year to go around and help people get set up with the digistudio thing. This was more of a high end type thing. I met the guy and he knows he has alot of work ahead of him. I think everybody knows it is going to come together, we just have to wait till the price comes down, and the technology is fully supported. soon very soon.
