Anybody know what I should get for an 8 channel Mic Pre for at $1000? No digital processing needed.

If you don't already have one, get a mixer. Mackie, A&H, Soundcraft, and Yamaha all make good mixers in that price range. I'd put the pres in all of them in the same low end price bracket as the $1000/8 channel pres. The pres in that bracket are all different, but I have not seen anything that will really knock your socks off. Most sound good if you are careful not to push them too hard. If you already have a mixer, I wouldn't fall into the trap of making an incremental change in quality rather than working with what you have. (Or rather, I wouldn't fall into the trap again. )

Bob's got a good point.

I will throw in one positive vote for the Mackie Onyx.

Frankly, the Onyx 800R (8 pres, AD conversion, etc) is, IMO, one of the better values in audio right now. It's right at your price point and does everything that it's intended to do and well at that.

The Onyx line of mixers is also a great deal - especially if you opt for the firewire!

Cheers -

Even if you don't need the 8 channels of A/D, the Onyx is great. It still offers 8 channels of analog output.

I use it along side my Millennia preamps and don't think twice. I'm not saying it's *quite* as nice as the Millennias, but it's not that far off the mark. Considering the Millennias cost nearly $4K versus the Mackie's $1K, I'd say they certainly rank as a good value.

Interesting -

You seem kinda hell-bent on the Presonus.

For what it's worth, I don't recall the Presonus ever having the Jensen transformers. The MP20 did, but I don't believe the M80 ever did. (The Jensens aren't exactly tiny, I don't think there's real estate enough inside the M80 to even fit them plus take into consideration heat dissipation.)

If you want an in-depth review - our old staff reviewer did one and it was enough to seriously piss off Presonus (IOW, not a positive review.)

Not so much the Presonus. Just hate the idea of buying another AD unit that will be sitting idle. I will say I heard another good review of the Onyx from a colegue of mine just today.

My thinking is, in theory, 1000 bucks on just a preamp should buy you better amps than 1000 bucks on an all in one unit. ?
