personaly i record mostly metal-hardcore-and punk bands so 12 channels at 96khz dont do it for me with the upgraded version. maybe if i had some digital mixers or mic pres then and only then could I record at 96 on all 24 tracks.
on the basic version the a/d converters do not support 96khz from the analog inputs but with digital signal in you can do 12 tracks in 96 instead of 24 like on the xr
i say screw it and just record at 44.1 on all 24 channels using analog in.
basic version. up to 48khz 24 channels 1/4 ins. up to 96 on 12 channels digital ins.
xr- up to 96 on 12 tracks 1/4 in. 96 on all 24 if you use digital ins.
i love my hd24 but i hate the 12/12 breakdown when you want to use different sample rates.
The ADAT HD24 is Alesis' basic offering in hard disk recording.

The HD24XR takes the HD24 to the next level with I/O that offers 12 channels of 24-bit/96Khz recording with higher-quality converters.
