I'm looking for opinions on an Allen & Heath system 8 MXIII. I have never seen one, and was planning to use it in conjunction with a Firepod

A popular board close to 20 years ago. It was designed to be used with the Brennell 8-track multi-track recorders to compete with Tascam gear.
The Brennell was no Tascam, more like a Triumph Spitfire-always breaking down! The System 8 was a decent board, better than what Tascam put out then. I owned a A&H Saber back then, and have owned quite a few A&H's over the years. You will have to be very careful with it. Don't ship it (probably shouldn't MOVE it!), don't spill coffee into the faders, and don't expect everything to work! Parts are more likely than not unavailable. Allen&Heath has changed ownership a couple of times over the last 20+ years. If you end up buying the desk (for God's sake NOT on e-Bay!!!), check it out THOROUGHLY-every input, ouput, send, and switch function. Go to their website and they have a pretty decent section on "Old Products", select that, the to the left of the screen that brings up, you'll see "Products", "Tech Support", blah blah."Products" will let you see that board and its brochure, ser# dating, etc."Tech support "will let you download service info. Very handy and much better than many manufacturers. BTW, really check out the power supply, as they are prone to leaking filter caps, and the lamps and switches they used back then were sometimes.....twitchy. But the sound-clean, plenty of punch and headroom-on a good condition model will be worth it at the right price! Good luck!
