As a last-semester Music Business major, I have to do a career project that involves interviewing and possibly visiting recording engineers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am specifically interested in discussing Internet use in a today's studio environment and what qualifications are looked for when hiring students for internships. This can be an interesting topic on so many levels. Internet use on what level? For the transfer of data files, both stored and in real time? For communications? I know the internet has certainly changed my life significantly in the last 5 years, though it hasn't really effected the music I engineer/produce.
However, I know several of my friends have "e-mailed" mixed to the client, and received 'touch-up' information prior to "breaking the session" and having to do a 'recall', saving a small pile of show biz cash. There are also tons of sites that permit, hell, some even encourage the taking of samples, no restrictions, no licensing fees...nothing.
This gives a hell of a lot more users the ability to create product with sounds better tailored to the application. At the same time it may be limiting the imagination of the creator as they don't endeavor to create their own new, exciting, fresh sounds.
There are so many aspects to how the internet is our best friend, and our worst enemy that its a wonderful topic for extended discussion/debate. However, we really should examine one or two aspects at a time...and keep this going on several threads for quite a while.
Everyday someone is going to find a new way to employ the internet for the creation, promotion, distribution of audio product. Everyday, this information can be shared with the 'congregation' is a good day IMHO.
