OK, I want to do a clean install of XP. However, I can't format the hard drive.
I put a boot disk in and do "format c:" nothing..all I get is "bad command...etc"
So i did the "fdisc" thing. I get this prompt that says "volume label" I have to list the volume label...What does that mean?
Can I format XP? I know I can format by right clicking the drive...But drive C can't format itself. What if I loaded the program on Drive D then formatted C...put the OS back on C then formatted D?It's kind of a "ring around the rosy" thing but could that work?

Are you using the boot disk, or just a system disk that you formatted? Go with the Install disks that came w/ XP, then follow the procedure just as outlined by Opus..."Delete the current partition..." etc...
This *should* give you the option to format using NTFS or FAT32...

go thru the install process for XP..just like Win2k there should be an option to tell it to delete partition and then it should let you format it..remember you are not using DOS anymore? Especially with NTFS formatted drives!! Fdisk will only want to create logical DOS drives and not NTFS based drives...
