A friend of mine would like to transfer his old cassette tapes into his computer. Unfortunately, since I'm a mac user, I'm not too familiar with any PC recording software. Pro Tools Free won't run on Windows XP. Any recommendations? Thanks.
You didn't say what soundcard your friend has but I did just that on my old computer with a SoundBlaster. Just use an adapter from the headphone out on the boombox or stereo outs from the hi-fi system and plug that output source into the 'soundcard' stereo input. My SoundBlaster came with 'recording' software. The quality of the result will depend on the soundcard hardware.
I'm not sure what soundcard he has. It is whatever soundcard comes with the new HPs. But i'm more concerned with finding some decent recording software (like Pro Tools Free)
Thanks for the quick replies, guys. So is it safe to assume that there is no decent free software for Windows XP (partitioning is unfortunately not an option in this case)?
last time i looked musicmatch had a feature for using soundcard inputs to create mp3's from an analog source. there was free or cheap version at one time. [[url=http://[/URL]="http://www.musicmat…"]Musicmatch[/]="http://www.musicmat…"]Musicmatch[/]

Hope this helps or a least gets him started,

Seriously, for just transferring stereo tracks, the built in Windows sound recorder would work fine.

Lee, I haven't played with that since XP, have they removed the 60 second time limit? Might make some pretty short songs otherwise... Steve
