You didn't say what soundcard your friend has but I did just that on my old computer with a SoundBlaster. Just use an adapter from the headphone out on the boombox or stereo outs from the hi-fi system and plug that output source into the 'soundcard' stereo input. My SoundBlaster came with 'recording' software. The quality of the result will depend on the soundcard hardware.

I'm not sure what soundcard he has. It is whatever soundcard comes with the new HPs. But i'm more concerned with finding some decent recording software (like Pro Tools Free)

Seriously, for just transferring stereo tracks, the built in Windows sound recorder would work fine.
