If I may,

Completely different animals.

One is designed to be a very clean, sounds the same from low gain to highest, very quiet, very fast, neutral preamp.

The other is based on the topology of the old Neve modules of the '70's. Amplifiers with known performance issues, transformers that have a "sound", quiet, professional performance, but with controllable coloration as the desired goal.

Both are transformer coupled, both deliver high gain, and high level outputs, but they are aimed at different uses. They also complement each other very well, what ones does well, the other isn't best at, and vice versa.

I own a DBX 576 preamp(which I use with a shure ksm 32 condenser). I've been told by Mr. Rip Rowan, recording engineer, that 85%(or more) of a vocal sound is determined by the mic, aside from the singer's ability, of course.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on whether an upgrade from a DBX 576 to a Great River me1-nv would make a noticeable upgrade in sound for a home recordist using nothing other than mic, preamp, compressor?

I'm not D.K. but I can say that mic pres absolutely make a difference. In fact I will go so far as to say that a great mic pre can make even a cheap mic sound much better. In the case of better mics, certain pres can make them sound even better ... I have a U87 that I have never been very wild about until I tried it with a particular tube mic pre. I was knocked out by the combination of the two together and I have commented how that pre makes the mic "sound like it looks".

Re; the GR/NV, these are wonderful pres, that add a richness and robustness to a signal that is creamy and thick while still maintaining transparency.. I would not complain if I had a rack full of the MP/ NVs ... and yes, the directs are very nice too. They add the same character to line level signals as the mic pre ... mmmmm Good Stuff!

So far I have used it for Bass. It is very very good for Bass. Big warm woooly sound.
