I really have never done a mic kit. I will prolly go with the infamous Shure setup. I will use 4 mics for the toms/snare, one for the bass drum. .i am sure i need to mic the cymbals. so i was guessing 2 overhead mics would do(which ones are good and inexpensive).

My real question is that I have an Imac g5 and need to buy a piece of hardware to mic the kit. what type of hardware would do the my job for under a 1000 dollars or maybe a little over(not including mic costs)

I use a MOTU 896, in Digital Performer, on my G4. I've been very happy with the quality of this box; I picked it up used for about $650 a year ago. The 896 will work with other programs, but you should research which ones, first, just to be on the safe side.

I take my G3 laptop, the 896, and a 10G external HD down to my drum room (in the basement), lay down the tracks, then take the stuff back upstairs to the main room, transfer the project to the G4, and finish tracking.
