Hello
I need some help.
I am looking to start a small studio just to do vocals.
I have a Windows XP
I am going to buy the digi 001 and digi card
A Good MIC
Headphones
set up speakers
Pro Tools LE

Do i need a DAT or ADAT
what is a dat ?
what is ADAT?

is there anything else i need?

To answer your question as to what you need?

You NEED to use the search button before asking impossible questions and before you spend another dime.

Great things can be done with an SM57/58 and that set up but a lot of homework needs to be done first.

This is the nice reply, further steps down this road might result in the proverbial virtual B*tch Slap that comes from asking stupid questions with only 3 posts

the ADAT connection only needs to effect you IF you want extra I/O in which case an ADA8000 purchased cheap will be a fine addition to the 001
giving you 16 in and 16 out

... a musician provides the music in the form of a completed PT session and all they need to do is add vocals

could be lots of valid reasons for vocal only

if you are just doing vocals then get an mbox or something from Maudio, a digi 001 depending on the cost might not be worth it. As far as microphones go with an AT 2020, At 3035, AKG preception mic and a Pre sonus mic pre guitar center had a deal you could get the AKG and the mic pre for like 150-200.

What I would do is this
MBOX 2
AKG preception and presonus mic pre
AKG, Sony, or Grado headphones
Powered monitors like events or alesis

I think this would be your best chance at a home/project studio and total cost would be under a grand, which is cheap. if you are doing vocals I dont know why you would need more then 1 input maybe 2.

difficult to say as the end result and your voice are unknown

the Mic and Mic-pre should be seen a a combination
audition a few and make your choice

once you have a combo we can help you to find the optimal interface method with the M-Box.

sung vocals with probably be on of the large condensers and a transparent mic-pre

a target budget may help us norrow down the search.

The ISA430 became popular/famous for a reason ... the competition has caught up and there is a huge choice out there.

I would go with a tube mic pre it is a little warmer, which is the presonus tube mic pre. It really depends on what you want to spend. Problem with mic pre's is that you wont get anything great until you spend like 800 or above, and we are only talking about 1-2 channels. You wont get the best recordings when you are using a cheap mic pre, but they can be good especially if you can mix them good with everything else. I use the pre sonus and the At 3035 when I do vocals for people and prof's at my school think that it sounds good. I would much prefer something like Millennia and a TLM 103 to do vocals because it is reliable and sounds great. I just did a project monday night with the Millennia and TLM 103 and two of my profs complimented how it sounded. But go to guitar center and try some mics out. Just have a budget drawn out on what you want to spend and try some stuff out. And shop around to get the best deal.

All right...since you arent really listening to the real pro's and are apparently offended by their advice lets go with this....You've got the 001...the LE package software...the AT 3035 mic...I assume you will buy some powered monitors of some sort as well as a pair of phones...The image you posted of a preamp tells me your training in this is non-existant and you're gonna learn by trial and error. Thats okay if you dont mind wasting your own time and money.

Since it also appears that M.F.and GuitarGet are your equipment professionals, then I suggest you buy an ART Pro Channel....around $320 new at M.F. and probably a lot cheaper on the net used. It has everything you'll need and wont sound like ass right out of the gate.

When you get it all bought I'm sure we'll see you asking questions about how to hook it up and how to set things....just dont be surprised when someone chides you for not using the SEARCH FUNCTION here to answer a question thats been asked by hundreds of NOOBEES like yourself.
