newbie pro tools preamp question

New to pro tools, I'm using a 002r. I've been recording with analog and ADAT systems for a few years. To get to the point. When I was setting my levels on the kick and snare drum mics using the 002r preamps, they were very hot. Even when the gain was turned down to 0 on the 002r, they were still very hot. I ended up running the mics through an external pre-amp. Is this normal or do I have to back the input faders way down on the 002r to compensate?

I'm not near one, but are there switches on the back, to select -10/+4
they should be +4.

when you start a seesion make sure oyu have the gains as low as can go i think it is -10 like the other post said, but this in the software not the hardware, not on the back of the 002 only when you start new sessions can you change this
