I've used and own MOTU products and I think they are fine and quite nice, reliable. Might I suggest you look into this FireWire device?

I can't help but recommend the Firewire interface that I own; the Mackie Onyx 400F. Pristine pre-'s, lots of outs, inserts on 4 channels, good converters. Very well built. Very few con's on this baby.

I'd stay away from Pro-tools, there are so many better things out there at a lower price. Get Cubase, it's a slighly more robust sequencer and you can get more plugins for much cheaper, it's nicer to the CPU as well.

id have to agree with xian, I've recorded with an 002, ive recently purchased an rme fireface and the quality difference is more than noticable. I was not at all pleased with our recording with the 002. Rme sounds awesome, though it is right at the top of your price range. Another interface that shows alot of promise is the focusrite saphire pro 26 in 26out, but they have to start shipping units first. Of course with that also comes the fact that no one has any real world results with it (small caveat) though I mean it is focusrite, so I wouldn't sweat it to much. Point being I love my fireface everything about it is awesome, sound quality, routing options, stability. I'm very pleased. As far as running pro tools, I don't. To me unless your going the tdm route I think its a waste of time. Some people bitch about compatability but I dont see that many situations were someone is going to be moving they're tracks around between studios once mixing has begun, and if its pre mix stage just export the wav files. Just one guys opinion

Gah, that fireface is really tempting as well... but i do like protools... Ive used cubase SX3, Sonar5, and Audition, and IMO none compare to protools

For God's sake don't touch the project Mix! The build quality is shocking, they sound as rough as toad testies. Buy a Motu 896 or traveller, great bang for your buck...
