I know little about recording but I have a large budget. I am looking for advice as to what to get to record live sound. I am already hooked up for live sound and I think it would be easier to a second board for recording. We use 8channels for drums, 4 for key/board, 3 channels for guitar, 2 channels for percussion, 1 for base, 8 channels for mics, 1 for aduio input.
I want it to be simple I want to be able to record all channels at once and them mix them down later by volume and perhaps rerecording channels.
What would you use to complete your system from the ground up? Not crazy dream studios but solid and able to do what I want. I have the money to pay for good equipment.

RADAR 24 HArd disk by Izcorp for full 24 track recording - you could even link 2 togther. (if you have enough dough). They are rock solid on the road or in the studio. They dont crash- Ever. Let me say that again. They dont crash. The converters in then are amoung the best.
For preamps and mixers the api Stuff is amoung the best and they offer Rackmounted Strips of the stuff. They sound great and they hold thier value.

I have been using my 002 quite successfully to record based on the 8 tracks available. I have rcently connected a ADA 8000 via optical for an additional 8. i only have the one optical lead, ADA out to 002 in. I can see the adat tracks in the IOs, im getting a signal on the front of the ADA, but no signal into protools, i am set to optical in settings?. what am i doing wrong Bobbo

seems a good idea to me for you to get hold of some good people around you. Perhaps you can find a practicing recording engineer in your area that you can hire a few hours to walk you through the good and bad points of various things. He / she could probably give a lot of good advice, which would allow you to start your search in a more specific direction.
You could look for a system allowing you to record all 27 channels at the same time for later mixing. Add a few channels for audience sound while you are at it. That amount of channels is a bit on the high side for "home studio type" equipment, at least it takes quite a bit of optimization. So you are probably heading into professional price equipment. You will save a lot of money and trouble if you find the right dealer or consultant to help you out. It might be a good idea to aim for doing recording on your equipment and later renting a facility for the mixing part of the project
There are also questions of whether you are going to have a separate crew doing the recordings, my experience (limited) is that it takes a bit too much for one person to both mix the show and record it.
