I use a lappy for most of my recording needs. It works but I can't run a ton of VST/VSTi's. I'm using Cubase SX on an Intel machine. I freeze tracks to release the strain off of my CPU, but that can be a time consuming process.
My non-laptop computer ain't no slouch and I was thinking of using it as an external processing machine where it would be used just for my VST/VSTI's.
I've read that this can be done, but I haven't read where anyone has actually done it. Has anyone tried it? Does it work well? What are the concerns regarding latency and sync? How much set up is required? What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Cubase/Nuendo has built-in capabilities for this called VST System link. I've never tried it, but I've heard it's a POS. I've also heard that FX Teleport is much better, but again, no experience.

I'm running an old Mac G4, but just ordered my new Mac Mini (dual processor, pentium chip) and running Pro Tools.
How in the **** do I get 2 mac's connected? And what's the protocol with Pro Tools? I know VST System link in Cubase, but have no idea what's with Pro Tools.
Can someone PLEASE enlighten me to the information I need to get my studio back up and running!? Ideallly I'd like to have the G4 running all my plugins and the Mini running Pro Tools to handle in/outs.

seriously I know it can be done with nuendo but I've never actually tried it. If you look in the pdf help files that come with cubase it should tell you if it can be done.
