I want to start using a PreSonus StudioLive 16 channel desk to multitrack all my band's shows. We have our own soundguy now, but almost all the venues we play have house sound systems.

Optimally, we'll be able to just plug our SL into their mains and monitors, and mix right from it. But in situations where that is not practical, we'll need some sort of splitter.

I found [="http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARTARTS8"]this[/]="http://www.zzounds…"]this[/] 1-space ART 8-channel splitter with ground lifts for a couple hundred bucks; I'm thinking that two of those in a 2-space rack plus two of [[url=http://="http://www.audiopil…"]these[/]="http://www.audiopil…"]these[/] 16-channel 15-foot XLR dual fantails would get it accomplished fairly inexpensively and versatilely.

Am I on the right track? My goal is to be able to just put the ART's in between the house mics and the house snake, and be able to deal with any ground issues if there are any.

I see there is a "poor man's splitter snake" from Audiopile as well, but that has no ground lift and I'm not sure if it would pass phantom power to the mics from the FOH board.

Or is there a better way?

basicly, it will do

the biggest problem is communicating your wishes to the house soundguys...
they may not want to use any outside equipment at all
and you'll have to put the splitter in between their mics and their snake...
if anything goes wrong, they'll all point at you

I would go for 2x 8x15ft + 2x8x30ft(at least)
from the splitter to their snake is only a short run
but you never know how far away your desk will be located
and you don't know how you need your patching,
how far apart the xlr's will be, etc.
so I would get 2x8 instead of 1x16

also be aware that this kind of equipment is not easy to sell on if you ever wanted to, so expect to take a heavy loss.

I use a ART T8 for a similar purpose but don't need phantom power, it may be a slight savings to use one of each if you think that your need for phantom power would not exceed 8 channels.

Pretty certain that the T8 would transfer phantom power by using the XLR input and TRS 1/4" input, bridging straight through (then use a 1/4"TRS to xlr cable) but not absolutely sure.
ART makes good stuff rugged, dependable. It does have a very shallow chassis depth so best mounted in a road case sized especially for it. A real PITA to reach into a standard sized case to switch anything around.
