Is there really anything to this summing bus thing? Is there any difference in the qualtiy? I am a Cubase SX2 user. Has anyone started to mix outside the box and noticed a big difference?

Yes, there is most definitely an audible difference. If you're using a high-end console the sound quality doesn't even compare.
