I'm glad to hear of another satisfied U195 user, I had alot of fun designing it (mostly the trial and error recording & listening).
I see a good question here: What makes you like the mics you like? Is it because Sinatra used it, or someone told you to when you were starting out; does it really sound good or is it just familiar?

Hello - I am new here but welcome just the same to David. I like microphones which tend to do the thing I would do later with an eq. Like an AKG D112 on kick sometimes has the right dip in low midrange and the right high peak for a good sound right when you bring up the mic. Of course sometimes I wish the peak was at 10k instead of 4! This is why a 57 is still (Royer ribbons aside) the first thing I think of for guitar amps. Up against a nice flat mic they don't sound very good solo. But in the mix! Guitars cut right through, no problem.

In other words, if I have a band set up for tracking, and I run a DAT on the mix (just to have)I want that mix to be able to stand up near the final mix and say "nice dress lady".

We discontinued the U97 because it takes a "special" skill set to produce something that cheap that's worth anything to both customer and manufacturer. If we had an infinite supply of cheap, skilled labor, it would be a viable product. Since we don't, it's more important for us to focus on items that justify the time spent on them, it makes everybody happier.

McNair here. Glad to see ya at one of my favorite recording sites. I need to get you a copy of the Rick Trevino record that we cut at Sonora. Used a U95? I think. I forgot which Soundeluxe, but boy it was perfect for Rick's vocals. Keep up the good work and maybe I'll see you when I'm back in LA. I'd love to here were you are with the Elux 251.

The 251 is now exactly where you said it should be: full with the same highs you heard. (Dave heard an early proto of our 251).
You probably used a U95S at Sonora.

if I may: the day I went to Dave's to take photos for the interview he was experiencing auto problems. I snapped some of him with the tires, with his son, with the moon, in the studio, etc. . . TapeOp chose the tires - no reason I can put together either.

Uh, honorary Soundeluxe content for this thread- we did a U99/UM92.1/Valvet/TLM103/4050/some other stuff shootout a while ago, and the U99 was unanimously voted 'best all around,' and named 'the Cadillac mic.' You wouldn't think that was that important, but it beats the UM92's early nickname of 'the penis mic.'
