No problems at all. Be wary of Hyperthreading. If an application doesn't support it it can do more harm than good.

Slow hard drives will eventually cause a problem too. You might start to experience droup-outs. As always. back your work up often.

i would be shocked if it worked for audio.
we tested the Clevo D900 (thats what Alienware, Sager and we sell)

it did not do well in our tests at all.

it might run a few tracks but it does not perform anywhere near as good as the previous Clevo D870P Which was kink butt.(the 900 replaced it)

due to the PCI-E graphics.

PS are you using Nuendo/cubase or Sonar or what?

sonar 4 on windows xp pro...

i would need to upgrade my drive to 7200 or use an external drive of sorts... external suggestions?

I use an Nvida Quadro 3400 PCI-E based graphics card on my Avid/PT rig and it works fine. I don't think that's the problem.

would the firewire audio card not work well with this pci-e issue? i am still a little confused...

this would be a dual bus system thus why it works.
beside with PT LE your not even making it sweat with recording.

Hi Scott, your right about my Dual channel PCI architechture, but I use a PT HD2 rig running 24 channels i/o at 96k with some heavy plug processing.

My work is mainly in the video/forensic market so i needed a top notch g/card - the nvidia (which was bloody expensive!) fit my needs and am quite happy with it. I also use an Avid adreneline system on the same machine set up with a dual boot depending on the application i need. I will eventually buy another machine for this - but seeing as mine cost me way too much moolah, i cannot currently afford it.

I will however have no qualms about getting a PCI-E board again when i get another machine. (Digidesign themselves recommend a Dell w/s with a PCI-E card).

I'm afraid I have no real experience with AMD processors. I've always used Intel. I started way back when AMD's were a bit...tempremental. Although i do have an AMD based laptop that runs like a dream - although i only use it for 'office' work.

What i will say is that for basic multi-tracking, i don't think our man fontane with the alienware lapptop will have too many problems with a bit of audio. Yes i'm sure that running 100 tracks with assorted plug-ins will cause some difficulties, but hey, when i started, you had 24 tracks on a 2" machine and that's it. It seems to me that people have gotten a little lazy in terms of housekeeping with DAW's. The most tracks i've ever used on my PT rig is about 80, and it was a pain in the butt. I didn't know where i was. I eventually, after two days hard work, got it down to 26.

A single bus PCI/PCI-E architechture will eventually run out of steam somewhat quicker than usual, but i'm sure that a quick run on Sonar will be OK.

If he wants to get into serious tracking, then a laptop isn't the best anyway. PCI-E or no PCI-E.

thanks for your help... well, after such jitter about running on my alienware i have decided to purchase a dual 1.8 g5 with 2gb ram...

i may use my lap top for some mobile work if anything...
