For me, no. I use win2k, and I move soundcards and other hardware around like potatoe chips! So, that silly MICROS~1 registration scheme where you have to get a new reg code from MICROS~1 everytime your hardware changes, is not going to work for me.
But WinME is along the same 16/32 bit code kludge lines as win98 & win95, so going to Win XP will be worth it if all your hardware is supported, and you don't mind sending your hardware configuration to MICROS~1 everytime it changes.
It will be much more stable.

I'm currently doing some testing with WinXP..just installing it as I type on my other computer..I'll let you know how it goes..as far as the new code every time issue..it is lame..but hey..I'm sure it will end..hopefully..my audio machine isnt hooked up to the internet so I have to call every time...ewwww!!!

WinXP update...Waves can not be loaded! I talked with a Waves guy who reccomends not to use it in XP just yet! Also Wavelab has some issues as well loading up..I get C++ runtime errors...oh well..I'll keep pummeling away at it and let you all know what I come up with..
Munkee...stay with WinMe for now..dont upgrade..if you want you can always switch to Win2k..I use it and love it very much!

Yes, I have heard that. Win9x versions have a limit on the amount of RAM.
The win2k, winXP are real OS's and can handle large RAM.

Since most home users use win9x, and have probably barely 64MB ram (god, my brother still uses Win95b, w/ 32MB!! I did upgrade him to IE5, tho.), I don't think MICROS~1 ever really fixed this.

I updated from 98se to ME. Therefore, I would be updating from ME to XP...Is it bad to do updates as opposed to full installs??? Especailly since I've already done one?(98se to ME)...I've heard other other opinions...what do you think???

That's kinda a hard call. I would suggest going from winME to winXP, though, to do an install. Backup configuration things like Favorites, your Start Menu, the Quick Launch. That way you can overwrite these, and easily 'upgrade' your needed links and stuff. You will have to reinstall alot of programs, but not ALL of them. Things like Cubase or heavy duty apps usually need to have the install procedure to set registry entries and register dll's.
In general doing an upgrade will introduce some weirdness of the registry or files that may not get overwritten properly.

I would reccomend not upgrading but doing a full reinstall to XP "if" you were to go that route..for the meantime I would not go there yet munkee...it's still in the eval stage and not a final release product..there are plenty o bugs to fix and issues to be found..I'm finding that Waves wont install into my system..get a good amount of abrupt restarts and other wierd issues..I played back some audio tracks but I cant really tell how well they are playing without waves plugins installed to gauge properly. I know someone who has installed Waves perfectly and waiting for him to respond to me on how he did it! Until then, go to Win2k on a full install...it's better that way since it has a different type of shell than WinME

yes, you can do that, BUT, again, some programs need to have registry entries, and dll's registered, so you'll have to install them. In fact, that's what I do,backup Program Files, and any other directories containing apps that I need.

Cubase WILL need to be reinstalled. Most MICROS~1 apps (Office, etc) will need to be reinstalled, same for Sound Forge. Other apps like Goldwave, Cool Edit 2000 and the like, I can get away with just plopping it into the new drive, perhaps only having to put in the reg. number again, and make sure the shortcut points to the correct place.

What about my Plugins...Pro 52. Reaktor, Halion etc.??

Personally, I would just reinstall the programs..save any data needed from any backups and so forth..if you dont know what files to save as far as .dll or .sys goes then dont bother..it can get messy!
Pro5 I believe you can just copy the .dll file from the vst plugins folder and paste it..but I could be wrong! Just to be on the safe side...reinstall it..it's not that hard to do.
Differences between XP versions...network functionality differences..remote functionality differences mostly...I havent really researched the differences yet as I am just getting used to the shell and the way you can configure it! It's very nice..very very tweakable...I mean to the littlest detail on graphics and so forth!

Well...so far it's ok..I havent been able to do much audio work due to the website construction..been busy trying different things and also trying to design a banner for it!
I'm going to do some recording tonight so I'll post how it goes later on
As far as the plugins and apps go..if they install in Win2k they should install fine on WinXP

I took it off of my system...I need to get myself a second hard drive for swap action...I dont like doing partitioning on my drive..one OS always seeks the other OS via the registry in ways that screw each OS up..I had some issues with USB cutting out on me..I cleared the partition and only have Win2k on my machine now and no more USB drop outs..I'll let you know when I get the XP up and running again on it's own drive.

For the meantime I would stick with 2k as there is far more support for it at the moment..you need to let manufacturers of hardware and software catch up with all the OS' changes

Its not more CPU hungry...it's more memory hungry..you will need more memory than 98SE so to speak..It actually helps with the CPU performance on certain applications and so forth...I need o get my hands on the latest and final release of XP..but...I'm about to get a very very serious gig running a Pro Tools studio and need to brush up on my Pro Tools skills so I will be installing a partition of 98SE to run Pro Tools Free so I can joggle the cobwebs in the attic to refresh myself!!! So XP will have to wait a good amount..same thing I did with Win2k...I waited until manufacturers of hardware and software caught up with the OS before going there...

I just checked out XP today and it looks quite a bit different from ME. Is the PC optimizing the same as Win 2K. Or is there a PC opt list already for XP?

I'm about to buy the full version of WinXP pro..not Home..Home version doesnt support mulitple Processors...the tweak is going to be different as they brought the MSCONFIG thang back into XP!! Woohoo!! Altho I usually do that editing in the registry anyways...There are some different tweak settings that are going to be in XP that arent in 2K...but I think its pretty self explanatory as to what you need to tweak...I'm going to purchase it on Monday so I'll have to wait for it to be shipped to me..I'll let you know from there...
