Actually....this is how you do it properly...
Go to the Regedit...follow the path of the example...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCdrom
Start at Local Machine...and keep expanding what the example shows...when you get to CDROM right click on the right where all the entries are and choose New...DWORD...label it Autorun and hit enter..next right click on the new entery and choose modify..it should default to 0 but just check to make sure..if it's 1 then change it to 0..voilla...you're done..

I followed your directions. I started my computer again and my modem did not work...It may not have been anything I disabled...but if it was do you know what could have caused it? I had to do a System Restore to get everything back to normal.

TURN THAT SYSTEM RESTORE OFF!!!!!! How many times do I need to yell at you for that Munkee!! lol

That system restore is going eat up valuable disk space and resources...now...if you have a modem then dont disable any internet options...I dont know what services are available for XP at the moment but I will soon!!

I have to say that System Restore has saved my butt several times...It's hard to get rid of, I'm addicted to it!!! I have it set to it's lowest possible setting.... I have the program "go back" that came with my Systemworks 2002, it's seems to take up too much space though.
What do you recommend?

I reccomend you get Norton Ghost...make a backup image of your OS install and get rid of System Works and System Restore...using Ghost can make things easier too...it makes a snapshot and stores it on another drive that you can than burn to a CD..takes 5 minutes to back up and 5 minutes to restore.

I mainly use Systemworks for it's speed disk program. Everything in Systemworks in on manual. So it can't possibly be hogging resources...can it?????

well..if it's installed and just waiting to be activated..yes! It can hog resources! I've never really used that app...ever since going to Win2k I just use the windows defragger..I've changed my ways and do not install any third party utility programs..I think maybe Dave Casey over at Tascam has shown me a new light!! lol!! I kind of miss that bastard over these days!! lol
Anyways...if all you use System works for is defragging then toss it like a used kleenex! The less you have going on in the background the better!!

So how should I adjust Virtual Memory with XP. I just installed another 512 megs of ram(now I have 1024 megs). My mouse died...I don't know if it had anything to do with the new ram or not...but I think I may have to adjust the Virtual memory.

well,first of all...does your motherboard actually support that much RAM? Having the RAM is nice but you have to make sure that the motherboard supports it!! With Virtual memory it's best to set the minimum and maximum the same...just like Win98...if you have 1GB of Ram then I would set it to 768 min and max..you dont need that much in virtual memory to be honest!!

My MB will support up to 2 gigs of ram. I started getting some crashes lately as well...However, windows states during the crash that I have a hardware conflict with "ati2draa" I assum that's my ATI video card. I notice ati has a new driver as of 10/22/01 for XP. I've had XP on my computer for a couple weeks...Is it common that the problems could be starting now?

I did switch my ram selection from:
"NO Paging File" to "System managed size"...maybe that was the problem?

welll...confucious say....if one tweak something and one notices crashes....one should not have tweaked!!! lol!!
And as we speak I am currently on XP!!! Yeehaw!! It's still the Eval build but nonetheless it's XP!! :D
I'm going to see if they will update it to make it more of a newer version..we'll see how it works!!

Should I set the virtual memory the same on my audio harddrive? Or the the App drive?

hold off on setting that for the moment...I'm doing some tweaking and for some reason lost my paging file due to it!! Boy I love new OS'!!! lol
I'm going to reinstall again as now when I restart I get a wierd BSOD that my system has never given me before!!! But you should use it on your main OS drive and not your data drive..you can set the swap file to your data drive but I belive that could cause some hiccups when pulling data from your audio app..I'll let you know more..until then just keep working with it and having fun!

What is ACPI and why should it be disabled? How is your XP experiance?

ACPI=Advanced Configuration Power Interface. It allows Windows to control IRQ's and power configurations so that you dont have to mess with anything. With Audio systems this is bad since most gear really cant work that way. It doesnt like Windows controlling it and telling it where and when to communicate with the processor.
My XP experience...interesting...it took several attempts to get Waves installed properly plus several tries to get my TC native plugs to be authorized and open up..Also I'm noticing something very very wierd..It says I have 2.6 GB installed when all folders and files added up are really under a GB!!! I have deleted the latest restore and shut off system restore and so forth but I still cant figure where that extra information is kept!! I've been busy specing out a patchbay install for a Pro Tools Video/Audio suite so I really dont have much time to get into software stuff right now..I'll be busy for the next week or so doing this and then I have to figure out a patchbay system for a remote Pro Tools rig..wiring..my favorite thing..no joke..I'm a solder junkee!! I love wiring!!!

So I should set mine to Standard PC?? Your seeing the same thing I did. 2 extra gigs of HD space used for me,(my audio drive which has about 750mg of samples states that it has 1.7 gig of used space???) and I don't know where it is...I think it has to do with virtual memory setting.

Oh...yes...absolutely install it as Standard PC..no doubt about that at all.
As far as the extra space on the drive..I dont neccessarily think it's the VM thats doing it..could be but I really doubt it. I'm actually about to do some testing on it now since I finished my quote for the install and waiting on his decision...like you care right!! lol!!

Yes Munkee....it's a combination of two file entries to your main drive....one is the PageFile.sys which is the size of the virtual memory...the second is a file called Hiberfile.sys which is about 500MB or so..add teh two up and voilla..if you have a swap of 768min and max plus the hiberfile....1.2GB or so..I'm looking into how to possibly get rid of the hiberfile.sys file and if it's really needed or not..Win2k does not have this so I'm wondering what the dillio is on it!! If you look at the post I put on WinXP...Very interesting you'll read some technical mumbo jumbo but it explains that you can put the swap on another drive or create a multiple paging system....more testing to come!!

Well...they may not have implimented these into WinXP...those tips are for Win2k/NT4...give me a few bro..I'm doing a complete install of XP..I had a dual boot with Win2k but I lost that install for some reason..tweaking with XP killed the boot log for 2k and couldnt even repair it!!
I'm almost done...hopefully the install for the studio wont happen right now since I need to finish this XP install..plus if the install happens I need to set up an area for wiring!! Oh Joy!!!

Try adding them to the registry, in every other MICROS~1 OS, theres a few settings that can be added to the registry to implement them.

In Win2k UDMA66 enabled was one of them.

This optimization page for win2k specific, but I don't really think MICROS~1 has changed winXP all that much.

My guess is that it is a file for laptop hybernation mode.

How do you set to standard PC when you have dual cpu's ? if you select standard the OS only sees one of the cpus :(

You need to set it to Multiprocessor mode..MPS..it's above Standard PC in the list..keep scorlling up and it will give you that option..also make sure you have the Pro version and not the home version..the Home version does not allow multiprocessor support..
And Munkee...those entries are there in XP..as far as what you set them to I'm not so sure...I'm a little bit confused on that too...maybe ljp can shed some light on that one for us!!

Aaron..MPS in XP and 2K..both options exist..you do have the Pro version of XP right? If you have the home version than it doesnt support dual procs...only the Pro has that support!
You can change it in the Device Manager even..Expand the computer listing and double click the name(could be Standard PC or ACPI).choose driver..update driver..show list of drivers(or something like that)choose MPS multi-processor ..restart and it should be all set to go!!

Opus, I've got the 428 working in XP just fine now - all stuttering is now gone.

There's a .sys file available that you put into your windows/system 32 folder that does the trick - send an email to Daniel at Tascam at custser@tascam.com and they'll send it to you. Or you can drop me an email and I'll send it to you.
