can anyone tell me how to connect an outboard effects unit into a zoom 1608. the web site says to connect to the line ins but that doesn't seem to work. ideally i want to be able to route the effect wherever i want

First make sure you are sending the external effects box sound,
First make sure you are sending the external effects box sound, this could be done using an output (not the main outs) from your recorder or just using it inline as your record if it has no other audio outputs.
For example:
Line out of keyboard ---> effects ---> line in on recorder
You might have to record enable the tracks you effects unit is pluged into also.
