Hi,

Stairway To Heaven is the most famous song I know where "here's to my sweet satan"... " was added in reverse to the song. At the least, this has increased sales because people buy the record just to hear what all the weebee jeebee buzz is about.

Adding low end bass also has an effect. Increasing certain frequencies can stimulate us in different ways.

I know some do this with images in advertising. Graphic artists insert certain words or even sexual content that is hidden, however, it is picked up with our subconscious eye or mind.

Can taboo messages or inserting audio tricks like these into music actually increase sales or popularity? What are your thoughts on adding subliminal audio messages or effects into recordings?

Their are reasons I believe sales are boosted by them. Firstly, the rumor mill gets stirred up and people want to "hear it for themselves" and this alone generates sales.

As per the message itself affecting the attitudes of the listener subliminaly, a ban on single frame subliminal messages was inacted in the US after it was stated that a single frame of "drink coke" and "eat Popcorn" caused an increase of consumption by the test subjects.

Do you believe it?

Do you know this for a fact, and if so, how? Have I missed some sort of announcement that disclosed that that was purposely put there? It is my understanding that it is nothing more than an anomoly that someone happened upon. When I first learned of this "message" in Stairway to Heaven," I went and listened to it without knowing what I was supposed to hear, and I didn't hear anything intelligible. Then, when I read the words that I was supposed to hear, some of it was easy to recognize.

Overall, I think it's a lot of garbage. :)

have you missed something, who knows... You didn't vote either way though (smile)

It would be interesting to have someone from the actual band here or the engineers, producer's or the mastering or marketing team of Stairway To Heaven chime in and tell the entire world what it's finally all about.

Was it intentional? cool... another interesting part of this topic.

My first couple years in this biz were spent loading cassettes and making cassette duplication masters for 2 different dup. houses. We had several clients with self-help titles supposedly utilizing subliminal messages. We had about 100 titles for one client, all of which were a half hour per side of a running stream, a little creek or something. Supposedly underneath the recordings were messages to help people stop smoking, lose weight, relax, any number of things. Each title was for a different purpose.

No lie - We typically ran 100 copies per title/order. On one particular order, we accidentally loaded the wrong title into the wrong shells. 100 copies. We thought, "screw it. They'll never know." After all, to us, they all sounded exactly the same. Within 2 weeks, we were re-doing the order to make it right. Somehow the client knew that the audio didn't match the title. I don't know how, but they knew. It was the only time they ever sent a title back for that reason, and it was the only time we made that mistake. Maybe there's something to it.
