Has anyone here ever used [="http://ardour.org Ardour DAW[/]="http://ardour.org Ardour DAW[/]? I want to run it on Linux ... any thoughts / advice? ps it's free ...facepalm

i am thinking of running it along with [[url=http://="http://www.hydrogen…"]hydrogen drums[/]="http://www.hydrogen…"]hydrogen drums[/] ... again free ..

i've dinked around with it and it works pretty well ... i'm new to programing drums on the computer ... we used to do it a lot with midi back in the 80's but i have been using dedicated drum machines for the past 20 years .. so this is a leap for me.

i run PC so Linux is a must ... otherwise with my big mouth pissing people off i get hacked / virused / wormed every month or so ... Linux keeps that at bay ... never been hacked on Linux. i can run Reaper on Linux but my computer isn't powerful enough ... need a new laptop. same thing in order to run Studio One, i gotta get a new computer and right now i have to admit i am financially challenged ..and barely making ends meet. i'm lucky i own my house free and clear but there's still property tax and upkeep.

not trying to get sympathy but available work is limited and i am forced to work less every day. i just had to give up one of the best paying days because my knees can't take it. getting older and my legs / knees are giving out on me because of the diabetes and i don't have medical insurance. i am trying to deal with through diet and weight management. i need a computer gig that makes money for me but who doesn't?

for what i am doing what i have works. that's all i can ask ... asap new laptop .. then i can get Studio One .. but i need to decide what kind of interface i want .. fw/thunderbolt or usb ...leaning towards usb because i can't afford a Mac.

I set up a Linux DAW a few years ago - I still have the box, but it's an old P4 and I haven't fired it up in a while. But I had Ardour running on it and recorded a few things with it. I also had Hydrogen Drums, which I really liked. That was a few years/versions ago so I imagine Ardour/Hydrogen work even better now. Back then, setting up Jack was a real pain, but now I hear that it's practically PnP. Good luck with it! :)

BTW, what kind if computer are you going to use for Linux?

it an old wheezer.. a Gateway laptop running ® Celeron(R) M CPU 420 @ 1.60GHz, 120 gig HD and 486.6 MiB

when i run audacity i use an 8 gig thum drive to supplement memory I went into the audacity software and set it up to use the extra memory as RAM as well as where i write the audio files. yeah i know but it works ... searching for an asus laptop with i7, 4+ gigs and a 7200 rpm huge drive.

i also have an older box i built years ago running dual 1800 anthlons with a gig of memory and 2 hds in a hot swap rack on the front panel, running Cubase VST 5.1 with Frontier adat cards and a pair of alesis ai1's for 16 in / outs .. the thing is a behemoth what with the seperate interfaces adat lightpipes and the fans in the computer make a but load of racket so i got a silence box for it ... it takes up a ton of space and needs a monitor. i just don't have the space for it frankly and i wonder if it will even fire up now and it has been in storage for at least 6 or 7 years ... i'm hanging on to it so i can get the files off it (if it fires up) when i get something new... i really want to move into a laptop with a modest interface .. usb or something of that kind that i can set up on my coffee table.

i'm watchin the Gregslist for a laptop ... see if someone will trade some gear or my gun or both .. i can take the gun to the pawn shop to sell it .. i want to make sure whoever gets it can pass a bg check .. don't want to be sellin' no gun to any nut cases ..
