Don't just look at the manual, READ IT! Do NOT even try to say that you have read it and can't figure it out because this is a pretty basic function of Cubase and described in detail in the manual. It's really only barely different from recording audio.

I can do that.

I am going to have to make a few assumptions...
1. you have a MIDI interface for the computer
2. you have a midi /controller/instrument (keyboard, controller, whatever)
3. you have some sort of internal VSTi you are trying to control with your MIDI instrument.

Create a new track MIDI track in Cubase. Set up the input so that its receiving a MIDI signal from your MIDI interface on the computer. Set up the output of the MIDI channel to go to the VSTi that you want to control.

Hit record. Play your MIDI instrument. You should be recording MIDI data.

Now there are some finer points not covered above. You need to make sure that your MIDI controller is transmitting on the MIDI channel that your VSTi is set up to receive. If not, you won't hear anything. You'll need to refer to the documentation for your controller and VST for instructions about setting that sort of thing up.

Thanks for all that information. Ok,ok... I 'attempted' to read some of the manual. I have being using cubase for about 6 years but only just upgraded to Cubase 4. Before that I was using Cubase SX and Logic Audio. But I have never needed to record midi until now. I am composing some music that I need to create a score for, and although I am an ok musician, I am inept when it comes to notating what I have created.

So, I am using a midi keyboard. And using an external sound card. ( Speedio by novation). I underatnd I need to plug in/out midi cable into sound hard.Do i need to change the setting in the DEVICES MENU?

My, you are an angry person. Doesn't phase or bother me. It's not your friendship or kindess I'm after, just some help with midi. Vent all you like.

I am not making assumptions that it's 'complictated'. For me is it complicated or I wouldn't be at this site.

Make a habit out of using the index in the manual. Not the pdf manual but the Getting started manual. It's only 200 pages at the most and there's a lot of pictures. :) Really. I think Steinberg makes one of the best manuals out there. They're pretty much step by step. If you look up your issue in the index and just go from 1 to 10 so to speak, you will figure it out in very short order.

Dont worry about the pro tools comment. For what you are wanting to do, notating a score, pro tools has no place near cubase. If Cubase isnt the right tool, then I suppose Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson Williams, two of the biggest composers in Hollywood, dont know what they are talking about since they both use Cubase. I'm still back on SX 3.11 so I dont know the particulars of 4. Just wanted to save you from thinking that you need to change platforms just because some guy that cant even spell the word "dude" and then goes on to describe a program as "shit" (nice detail) tells you so. You have all the capability there. You're probably just going to have to do some reading. I'd help if I could. I also use Cubase for scoring but I've never had to print a score. Best of luck. If I can answer any general questions about using VSTis in a sequencer app, let me know.

Ok, so I am now recording in midi. But for some reason in playback and even before I record, I am hearing all sorts of weird sounds, ie, the keyboard ( notes I'm not even playing). How should I set midi up in the 'devices setup'.
it gives me 2 options.
speedio ( which is my external soundcard)
and microsoft GS wavetable.
How do I assign a VST instrument. Should't my midi keyboard suffice? I tried assigning some kind of sound yet still had the problem of hearing multiple sounds when i was just hitting the one note. Mm, not sure what is going on.

If your keyboard has it's own sounds, you need to route audio into the soundcard from your keys. Otherwise you need to assign a VST instrument to create the sounds. MIDI is data only.

I don't have C4...still on 2.2 but I'm guessing the setup is the same, or similar.

For your MIDI setup, you should be selecting your sound card...if your MIDI is coming into the computer through there.

In your MIDI channel, you can route the output to a VSTi...if you have some loaded. Simply set the output to the VSTi you want and you should be controlling that.

If you are hearing sounds not from within Cubase (not a VSTi), your audio interface may be routing the MIDI data to the computers internal synth. You'll need to disable that either from within Windows or in the interface's setup.
