It's a decent budget unit, but pro is not a word I would ever associate with it. There certainly is much worse people are using. Sure wouldn't waste my money on one.

To offer heresay evidence: there are a growing number of Nashville indie engineers who are using the Eureka along with Neves, APIs, Nightpro, and Great Rivers...

So I'm told by a working Nashville engineer, who has a couple of platinums.

Generally, I would agree that lower cost stuff is a waste of money, but Presonus I think has really done some great things at decent prices...

No disrespect AudioGaff, but I think this one deserves a second look.

eureka

I've had a eureka for about a year now and I got it and an art prochannel at the same time to use for drums (mostly), vox, guitar, etc. The eureka in my opinion has some good options on it such as the impedance select and the fet drain knob (saturation). but I haven't liked the compressor for drums or aggressive vox at all. I leave that up to my prochannel, which by the way for budget gear is awesome, I like the eq on some things, I don't use eq on tracking except on some drums that need it. Plus I use my eureka on snare and I can get a nice good clean sound for the snare but when I want to give it some compression to control peaks and just have each sound kind of consistant, the clarity goes, the top end goes and then I sometimes have to add some click to the track to get the snap back, plus no matter what I always get some red on the recorder because the comp isn't stopping the peaks, and it could be me or I just haven't got used to the eureka comp, but I do know that the prochannel that I got at the same time I love, the comp is easy to use with and optical setting and a vari-mu setting it does its job well and on my ears doesn't kill the high end as bad as the eureka. I do mostly hard rock/metal, so thats just my opinion from what I have recorded.

If I were to do it again I would save up to get the api 3124 for about $600 per channel it is supposed to be killer at drums, and you will never grow out of it.

If I've learned one thing from this board, that will help me in future purchases it to get something you aren't going to grow out of.

No disrespect taken here. It's a decent box for the bucks, but I was quickly turned off by it when one of my clients brought one by. The mic is ok, the compressor seemed weak in response and yet a kind of nasty hard edgy sound.

I'd put up my Joe Meek VC1Qcs as being as good or even better since I least like the compressor on the Meek and the insert feature it has let's me add different flavors into the path that makes it a more viable tool for me.

aww and see Presonus is tempting me with a free A/D 192 card when you buy a Eureka... {sigh}

I am drooling over the Avalon AD2022 but i think somthing like the Voice Master Pro would be better for my piggy bank.

in any case i think i am going to take a bit of time to do the research...(maybe see if the shop will let me try some units out in my studio).

I think the Eureka may be equal to the Voicemaster if for no other reason,the mic pre is not as harsh or edgy sounding....YMMV.And neither of them comes close to the 2022.
