After recording a couple of songs using all 8 channels, when I rewind back to the first song
and only tracks 1-4 will playback. Tracks 5-8 do not show up on the meters and no sound coming out of the outputs. If I stop the tape at that point, shut the unit down and power it back up, all 8 tracks are restored and work properly. Move on to the next song and that works fine. Rewind to the first song and the problem reoccurs. And on and on. I also tried two different tapes and the same thing happens.
The heads have been cleaned with a dry cleaing tape and manually cleaned.
If anyone has any insite, it would be appreciated.

Sounds like the tape header is describing a 4-track tape. Try going to song 2, shut down restart (to get 8 tracks), then inch back to the start of song1 instead of rewinding. This process should not re-read the tape header. If you get your 8 tracks, it's the header, and you should consider doing an ADAT copy of the tape (after using the inching back technique) on to a tape that you have set up for 8 tracks.

Also, in reference to the earlier reply, I don't know the history of the machine. Just got it recently. Drum life is 560 hr. It does show a high error rate.

The heads could be clean but out of alignment. I remember reading back in thMe day about users that do not know how to properly clean the heads, would have various alighment problems. What is history? Has it always had this problem or is this been something more recent? Find another ADAT and check to be sure it is not the tape or tape brand that is the cause of the problem.
