I am a newbie, (sorry) who unfortunately has constraints on his time, so if this question has already been asked and answered somewhere in this mammoth forum, i do apologise. Otherwise - lets continue...
I am using Sonar 7PE, in Vista x64 with the EMU1616m Microdock as my DSP.
I haven't been mixing for very long, but all my previous experience really lies in using virtual drums, eg:Toontrack Superior v.1 which i think is awesome.
The other day a friend gave me a live recording of a drum track to try and mix. The snare, kick, toms and hh are fine, i can drag them to any area of stereo mix i want no problemo, but the overheads are awful!
Individually they can be moved any where i want but as soon as both L+R oh's are on at the same time they both merge right down the middle.
Trying the phase in and out doesn't help; i've tried moving the both the L+R oh's in and out of sync with each other; i've played with delays either as an insert or through a bus - but they still end up as a spongy mass of mono munching.
To add insult to injury there are also no ambient channels for me to play with.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how to over come this problem? I'd very much like to be able to give this guy a nice mix back.
Thanks in advance - Kev

Do you have a sub-mix master for the drums that has the OH's selected for L+R? If so then you need to select each one of the tracks as L only and R only. This will give you the separation you desire. Each track, if selected L+R, is routing each to the stereo master as a combination of both tracks summed.
