Try and get a good sound coming from the amp to begin with, then just capture it on tape. Dial the amplifier while kneeling in front of the amp/cabinet rather than standing up. That way your ear is directly in front of the speaker and you will be hearing what the microphone is hearing. You would be surprised how much a little change like this can change your own perception of the sound.

You could try recording it in clean then running it back through different amps so you can have the freedom to play around with what it's really going to sound like.
