this may or may not be a dumb question but here goes.

i am using the mbox with pro tools 4.

i want to buy either a usb midi keyboard or an actual midi interface. that would be my first question. what do you all recommend for the setup i am using? I am running on a Powerbook G4. 1 ghz. 512 ram.

what i want to do eventually is to use a sampler such as NI kontakt or NI battery or other drum samplers and have it so i can set up a whole drum kit in the sampler software and be able to trigger each drum (snare, kick etc...) sample by hitting the corresponding key or pad on my midi keyboard.
is that how it works?

is there a way to load up a whole classic piano so you literally turn your midi keyboard into a piano? or organ? etc...

i also use a Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-670 drum machine which has midi ins/outs. can i use that with drum sampler software? could i program certain kicks and snares etc... from sample CDs so that they can be triggered using the drum machine pads?

i would appreciate any help on on this.
i've wanted to get into midi and triggers for a while now but before i spend money on some equipment i want to make sure i understand how it all works.

Everything you asked about is possible. I would look into a keyboard instead of an interface; since you have the powerbook, keeping the devices to a minimum would help you maintain your portability. Look at the USB MIDI keyboards from M-Audio. I think you would do well with something like the M-Audio Radium.

i'll check out that keyboard by m-audio.

i guess in the end using the keyboard to trigger drums would be the same as using my drum machine yes? i mean if i set up all of the pads on the drum machine to match each individual drum sound on the sampler.

i guess thats why i was wondering if i should get a midi interface instead because i would be able to use my drum machine's midi/ins and outs as well as a keyboard for other things.

once i decide on what to get i hope setting this all up is not a problem.
and do only certain samplers work with pro tools?

recommend any good ones?

i know of NI battery for drums.

i think NI Kontakt is for loops and other samples such as strings and what not. can i use that one for full pianos?
there's one from MOTU right? the machfive i believe.

do you know anything about the FXpansion BFD drum module?
i think it may be a sampler as well.

i don't know of too many more.

i checked out the M-Audio Radium 61 key. looks great.
might even pick one up tomorrow if the price is right.

I use Kontakt, and it does everything I want a sampler to do. You can use it to load any instrument that there are samples for. It supports many different formats like AKAI and Gigasampler, so it can open just about anything. So much of picking software comes down to the interface. There are several good samplers out there, just as there are several good recording/sequencing programs. Between the top programs, it's really just a matter of taste.
