UPDATE: I have a CD that I set up with Amazon to sell at $ 10.99. Well they are now selling it for $13.25. They're pocketing a full $2.26 more than I set up to sell it at. Amazing! I make $ 4.95, whereas Amazon takes in $8.30 + shipping, and I'm sure there's some profit margin on shipping too. So if Amazon pocketing 55% was too much, pocketing 62% is ridiculous! Think of how much work goes into recording and manufacturing a CD and then think about how much work goes into just selling it on a website. Amazon is laughing all the way to the bank with their profit margins.

They have you by the gonads and there is not much you can do about it if you want to sell your stuff on Amazon.

Slightly off topic there is a HiFi resale shop near here. The charge 20% of the items value to sell it for you. The owner is somewhat of a well known shyster. Say you want to sell your unit for $200. he takes it in and puts it in his store and marks it up to $350.00. When he sells the unit he pockets the $150.00 and still charges you the 20%. He also never tells you when he sells something so you have to go there in person to inquire because he does answer questions over the phone. When you do go in he tells you that he does not have time to deal with your request and he will "look it up" later and get you a check for the amount. So a person has to waste the cost of gas only to be told that he can't get to you because he is sooooooooooo busy. Lots of people have caught on to his tactics but either they don't want to go the Audiogon route or the Ebay route so they let him rip them off. He makes most of his money by having his tech repair equipment and charges exorbitant rates for that service. His tech is GREAT but the owner is a shyster. This goes on in business all the time and it is NOT just Amazon.com that is ripping people off.

Sorry. I don't buy your argument. You have produced a CD. Amazon has produced a well know brand that provides fast nation-wide shipping, a secure web site that takes multiple forms of payment and provides a ton of information, 24/7 customer service that has a great reputation. In short, you provide something that is small and commonplace; they provide something large and rare. 62% for them is not ridiculous. But in fact you probably already know that because you've already worked out what it would cost you to try to market the CD on your own...and if you did that you couldn't make any money at $10.99 or $13.25 or even $132.50 per CD.

There's definitely people who will just blindly do all of their shopping on Amazon without comparing prices elsewhere, such as on the artist's home page. I sell CD's on my site for between $5.00 and $6.00, when Amazon sell them usually between for $10 to $13.97. At least digital is taking over and the payout is much better via TuneCore. I sell about 20 digital download albums for every CD, so CD's hardly matter fortunately.

Amazon changes their mind more often than Kim Kardashian.

Most recently I found one of my CD's selling on Amazon for $16.51. This is while I'm getting only $4.95 from Amazon. So now they're doing a 70 percent markup!!!! 70 percent! So much for them only getting 55%. They reserve the right to do whatever they want. 30% is way too little for an online retailer to pay wholesale for a product.
