Hey guys, I'm new to the world of recording and was wondering what you guys thought of this. I have no EQ done on this track, I haphazardly threw a compressor on the master in Live and didn't tweak anything at all. I'm running a small 1w Randall Diavlo through a 1x12 V30 cab. Miced with a Shure SM58 with the windscreen removed. All of this is running into an old Mbox2. I quad tracked the guitars and tweaked the amp settings a bit to try and get a fuller sound. Hard panned two tracks, and then went not so hard on the other two. Any advice and/or criticism much appreciated. It sounds great to me because I come from using way too much gain, solid state amps, direct in pedals and other newbie mistakes. I'd like to have an opinion from people with good ears though, when your only comparison is crap it's hard to be unbiased. Thanks in advance guys.

I'm not a metal fan, but it sounds fine on its own.

The real test is how it sits in a full track. I suspect that full sound would not work as well with drums and bass, since it's occupying so much frequency spectrum. The key is getting it to sit in its own space in a mix and not intrude on the other instruments. Put some drums and bass on it and experiment.

See how it sits with the rest of the tracks.
I have to admit that I winced a little when you mentioned "haphazardly throwing a compressor on it", to a forum of pro engineers, this sounds a bit reckless. And, when you print the signal with processing you're locked down to that sound. OTOH, if you like the sound you're getting then none of that really matters. Check it again when you add other tracks to it. Some things that sound good on their own don't always sound as good when mixed within the context of other tracks. You'll just have to try it and see.

Thanks boys I'm working on getting a DI box so I can add bass and I may just sample drums because my drumming is not tight enough nor are my recording skills good enough to try and tackle drums.

Todzilla- should I be removing some frequencies so there is room for the other instruments? Maybe an LPF or something?

Donny - apologies for making you wince! I know very little about compression and was really just trying to up the volume a bit. I will update with an actual track soon. I appreciate the help because I am by no means a pro and if I can even learn a fraction of what you guys know I'll be happy.

I wouldn't add or remove anything until you hear it in context with whatever tracks you eventually decide to add.

Might I suggest you take a look at some youtube vids that explain compression, what it is, what it does, and what the various settings are, and how they effect whatever you are sending through it.
Anytime you use an audio processor - of any kind - it's best to know what it is, what it does - and in some cases, what it isn't, and what it doesn't do.
It can help you from reaching into your toolbox and choosing a screwdriver to drive a nail, as opposed to picking up a hammer. ;)
Here, I'll get you started:

Alright I went ahead and tried to scrape together a full mix in order to get a more accurate representation of what I'm sort of going for. Unfortunately I'm mixing with ear buds (try not to wince too hard.) I'm not trying to achieve a super hifi sound as I like a lot of the old school bands in the punk and thrash scene. My biggest goal is to be able to lay down tracks that don't sound like utter crap so I don't forget my riffs and can teach them to band mates and listen to them while I'm out and about. Thanks for that video that was an eye opener.
