I recently added an RME 96/52 card to my PC:

-ASUS TUSL2-C 1 GHz PIII
-Windows 2000

I think I might be having an interupt problem between the RME card and my Layla/24. I originally set up the PC using Opus' optimization document, and set it up as a "standard PC", which I thought does not share PCs. But upon installation of the RME, I find that both the RME and the Layla/24 are sharing IRQ 9.

Windows 2000 tells me that there are no conflicts, but I have been getting some strange erratic behavior out of my system since the installation of the RME card...weird audio foghorn sounds periodically during playback that last for about 5-10 seconds...my Waves plugins locking up...most times, during shutdown, the system goes through its shutdown routine, but I rarely see the message that tells me it is safe to turn off my PC...maybe once in 10 shutdowns does that message pop up. Other times, it just sits there as a blank screen with a light blue background.

Obviously, the easy way to troubleshoot this is to remove one of the devices, and see if the problem goes away, but since the problems are sporatic, and I need both of those devices during most sessions, it is a bit difficult to do. Today, I am doing a vocal overdub session, and I guess I really don't need the Layla today, so I might just try it without, and see what happens.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

By any chance do you have a UAD card and have version 3.10 loaded? I've been seeing and hearing reports of the newest drivers causing some serious issues and one of them is not allowing the system to shut down properly and cause some oddities in the playback or functionality of the system.

The best thing to do is try and get the RME or the layla card on it's on IRQ and see if that helps.

If you hae the UAD card and the 3.10 drivers move the UAD card to another slot. People have been reporting that is what they did to fix their problems.

I'm staying away from the 3.10 drivers until I see people are working happily again

As a matter of fact, yes, I am running the UAD version 3.1 software...sounds like an identical problem.

OK...how do I do that? I have already removed the Layla card, but it does not seem to have solved the problem. Sounds like you are right about the UAD 3.1 drivers.

I will try that. Thanks for the heads-up! Awesome!

Now one more quick pointer on getting different IRQ's for the Layla and the RME, and I should be set to go!

I moved the UAD card, and have re-booted about 10 times so far, and everytime, it has shut down perfectly, so that is a good sign...

I went ahead an re-installed the Layla card, and checked the IRQ...back on IRQ 9 again. So I went ahead and did some checking, and the following items are all on IRQ 9:

1) RME card
2) Layla/24
3) UAD-1 card
4) Ethernet card

Crap! That is four devices! I will do as you suggest and go into the BIOS and disable some stuff that I am not using (serial ports for example).

Thanks for all the help. I just hope that it cures the audio glitches too.
